Cooling fan issue/ testing

Cooling fan issue/ testing

2003 mini base model

I just got done putting in a used engine, a rebuilt trans (bad midlands) and still I have more to fix apparently. So The cooling fan does not come on. Not when the ac is turned on, and not when the car is on the verge of over heating. I waited until the red coolant temp light was flashing and still nothing. I don't know when the Hi speed is supposed to kick in, but I figured it should had been at that flashing light point?

So I have verified that both the power steering fan, and radiator fan do in fact turn smoothly. Have verified that the relay in the fuse box under the hood is good, and also went through and checked all the fuses in that same box, as well as the fuse panel in the drivers side footwell.

Like I said I get nothing from the fan when I turn on the a/c and the clutch is cycling.

On the big plug I get 12v constantly at the lower right contact point, but I get nothing at the upper red wire that is to the right of the ground. Using my test leads I provided my own ground, and ran a power wire from the battery. When I did this I get low speed.

I then pluged back in the big connector and provided power and ground at the small plug. This kicked on the high speed. I see no voltage at the small plug at the green and red wire.

Is this a failed resistor? How should I test it? I don't know if I got the car hot enough to kick on the high speed, but that light was blinking and the coolant temp gauge was pegged so I would think if high speed was working, it should have kicked in.

Help!!

The "failed resistor" will only stop the lowspeed fan...since you fan NEVER RUNS, look at other issues.

SOLVED

Went back to double check what I had already tested and I noticed the fan relay in the under hood fuse panel only had power to one of the relays poles, and not at the switchable one associated with the 5amp fuse #5 located in that same fuse box. Fuse #5 was fried. Don't know if it was a fan that stuck, or something that caused an over draw.

If the setup is like the early R50/53 the power steering fan and high speed fan are wired together and a lot of ppl have issues where the power steering fan goes out or gets jammed and pops the #5 fuse when the high speed tries to cut on, thus killing the high speed fan as well.

Lift the car if you can and spin that p/s fan see if its jammed up or spins correctly (free of jamming or difficulty)

Just had the same exact issue with the same exact symptoms but my #5 fuse wasnt blown, the fan relay itself was bad and thats the 2nd fan ive put in it!

So another fan it was!
