R50/53 Anyone ever notice r53's have the BMW "kidneys"?

Anyone ever notice r53's have the BMW "kidneys"?

If you look under the grill itself, you'll notice a split down the middle that is curved on each side of the split similar to the BMW grille. You think they did this intentionally to show some BMW DNA in the car? I can't really think of how it could help anything.

My thought it was mainly for support of the grille bars and to also let air pass in, can't comment on the exact reasoning behind the shape.

I'm at work so I'm not at liberty to do a search at the moment, but I've seen a few pictures of r53's where these kidneys are shown off as owners change the grill to match a BMW

Maybe its for support, but as far as letting air pass in I dont understand that. Wouldnt it just be an obstruction, and having nothing behind it allow more air in?
