Adjustable Steering Mechanism Fix

I have a 2003 R53, and the mechanism that allows the steering wheel to adjust up and down is quite worn out... when I hit a bump, the lever will fall down and the wheel will go loose.

Does anyone have any experience addressing this problem? It is annoying and becoming somewhat dangerous.

Thanks, Matt

Do you move it every time you get into or out of the car?

I never touch mine, so it is fine. But if it were failing, I'd pull away the plastic and use metal straps and self-taping screws to secure it into the "full up" position, where it sits now.

To replace the adjuster, it looks like it only comes as an assembly with the steering column for $460 - realoem

Just guessing it is probably some sort of egg shaped cam that tightens the thing. It may be possible to put a shim of sorts on the flat face (I imagine) must be part of the equation. This may give the extra grab you need. You need to look and see if you can figure how it works and then if you can add a washer or something that tightens it again.

I have the same problem, mine's done it for a long time, and I don't think I've over used it or anything. Any luck with a fix? I'm tempted to just duct tape the handle up.

I'm going to take the steering column apart this weekend - maybe I'll do a little DYI if I get it solved.
