R50/53 Can you drive the MINI S without the power steering pump installed?
Can you drive the MINI S without the power steering pump installed?
Hi all,
My power steering pump is making a lot of noise. It is probably failing. I can get them rebuilt for $225. (let me know if anyone a bettterdeal(
Problem is that I dont have time to take it out myself and was going to have the guy I have that sometimes works on my cars do the job. But he cannot keep the car there for 7 days inside and I dont want to leave it outside in his area for 7 days.
Can you remove the pump and still drive the car? Just to get it home?
Does anyone have a bad pump that I can buy to send in and have it rebuilt so I can just swap them out/
Any help appreicated.

I don't know specifically whether the car can be driven with the pump removed, but I can tell you from experience that the car can be driven with it inoperable. Just takes a little muscle.
Sitting here thinking about it, I guess that unless you connect the ends of the hoses still on the car together, whatever fluid is left in the rack would squirt out, leaving the rack dry, which I assume would not be good for the rack.
Anyone have an old rebuildable pump they want to sell?
edit...or if anyone has a pump they want to lend out, we could then keep one for the group to keep swapping out. I am www.lotusowners.com and very well known in Lotus circles. I would be happy to be the one to hold on to the pump, mail it out, get them back...etc. It costs about $300 after all the shippjng to do the rebuild process.

You can remove it. Check out this thread for a few more details and more discussion on this:
