Ski Rack for 04 MCS

Quick question for those of you that have a ski rack. I'm very big into skiing and I see many options for roof racks for minis (thule, yakima, etc). My question is, what model is the best? I'd like to hold at least 4 pairs of skis. The ability to hold at least 4 snowboards would be a great deal too. Thanks in advance.

Best to start with the original equipment rack system. Requires making holes in your roof, but once installed the hardware is discreetly concealed when the rack is removed. And it will provide the most solid system.

i love the OEM rack.. its super strong and fits perfect. You do get the frankenstien bolts, but they are cool IMHO.

I had a Yakima rack on my '05 when I had it and it clips underneath the plastic trip surrounding the roof. Very sturdy and extremely easy to take on and off. I definitely had 4 pairs of skis up there at once before (though put together like you're carrying them..double tips)

Here's a photo (not my car): http://www.minicarparts.net/product/...3060_LARGE.jpg

I've never seen a better rack than the OEM 1st-gen Mini rack. Part of my job involves a number of other systems, I've used roof racks on a number of different cars for a number of years, for a number of accessories, and I've never seen a better rack than the OEM Mini one.

In fact, I would argue it's part of the reason why I wouldn't consider a 2nd-gen Mini. Was it a pain in the **** to install? Yes. Was it worth it? YES. All my skiing, snowboarding, and cycling friends (pretty much all my friends...) are jealous. Heck, I even know paddlers who are jealous!

The reason im not too fond of the OEM rack is I called my nearest mini dealer and spoke to them about it and they informed me that they will not install it due to the fact it requires drilling. They said that they have done a couple installs and the owners of the vehicle come back with rust issues (live in Michigan with lots of salty winter roads). I'm feeling that due to my geographic location and the advice from my dealer, a snap on set would probably be the best idea. I really like the Thule and Yakima set ups but I'm not sure which to go with.....any thoughts?

it's all about installing it right. You need to use the windsheild glue stuff to seal between the bolts and roof - just like the instructions say. If you put enough on you will have no water\moisture getting through. I have had mine on for a good 5 years, living in Toronto with no issues. If you are interested i can show you the seal i have. go OEM rack go!

phil.
