R50/53 Re: The new 5 speed Getrag coming in 2005
I was really excited to hear that the mc was getting the new Getrag; However, I'm not so sure now. I was on the other site earlier and some have said that the new Getrag will consist of parts from the Ford parts bin. In addition, some are saying that there may be problems, since it will be "new" (growing pains) and. IMO, the transmission is not typically the cause of concern in "new " cars. What is everyone's feeling? Do you think the new Getrag will be better than the Midland?
I read the same stuff you read on MINI2. I think it's impossible to say whether the Getrag will be an improvement or not. The problems with the Midland seem to be relatively few and MAY have been addressed by MINI in the newer Midlands.
One thing that makes me wonder about the Midland, (which I have), is the repeated warning that increasing the HP of your engine might cause transmission damage. If this is true the margin of strength before breakage is inadequate.
It does seem that the change had nothing to do with "better", just company changes that preclude futher use of the Midland.
I wouldn't hold off buying a MINI just to wait for the Getrag.

Well said... However I wouldn't put too much stock in the Getrag = bad opinions.
And on the other side of the coin here's a great quote from Goonery on MINI2 (who really knows what he is talking about!) regarding the midland unit:
And for further fuel for the fire here's some background on the midland unit and why it was initially chosen: http://www.bridger.us/mini/?Y=2003&M...r5-speedManual

I don't think theres anything wrong with the Mid Gear box, but it seems to have a 'stigma' hanging over it. We build 600 cars a day, 6 days a week, over 50 % have the Mid Gear gear unit, thats 300 + gearboxes a day going to 300 + customers, if they were failing in large numbers you would hear about it in the press and on sites like this one. In general there a very few complaints about anything serious, after all if the product is not causing you a problem, theres very little you can actually say against it. If you really want a car now, I think you should go for it.
I agree that if I wanted the car now, I wouldn't hesitate; however, I will be getting a 2005 and now my original excitement regarding the Getrag is diminishing. It seems that it may be more of a bad change than a good one. I hope i'm wrong and the Getrag turns out to be great. When it was first learned that the Getrag was coming, there were many posts indicating how great the Getrag trannys are. Now it seems that people will be missing the Midlands. I'm confused. I know that the Midland probably is a great tranny dispite the recent problems, but do you think the Getrag will be great also? I guess we can only wait and see.

Why would mini change it when they are going to be changing engines in a few years? Just so that the copper will have a new trans every two or three years for part changes? Not sure if it’s the best move for the company, but is anything a car company does smart?
