DSC is an option on both Cooper and S - it comes with the Sport package, or you can order it a la carte. For all its over intrusiveness, there are applications where it's helpful (snow, The Dragon). Good luck.

Yup, Im planning on a Cooper S this summer but the Sport package doesnt interest me with the 17 inch tires. I want to go stock with the 16 inch v wheels.

But what I was wondering more or less is it worth the $500 dollars or would it mostly be turned off?

I live in Michigan and I think I remember you being from Michigan too Ryephile...do you have the option and if so do you drive mostly with it on or off?

Yes, I'm in Detroit. Yes, I have DSC. Yes, most of the time I have it switched off. Not because of the DSC, per se, but the stupid ASC aspect. This winter I've been leaving DSC on most of the time, however, especially on snow-covered roads. You know how the roads get "snow medians" between lanes - making lane changes tough and dangerous? Well, DSC keeps the MINI very stable during those lane changes, a huge plus. That's the biggest plus I've found so far.

Big plus - keeps car stable in rutted and/or snowy roads
Plus - keeps MINI on The Dragon even if you put a wheel off
whatever - scrubs way too much speed in corners, because....
negative - kicks in way too soon - doesn't allow the slightest wheelspin, meaning....
Big negative - Shuts down the party when you slam into 2nd and 3rd gears - always
