R50/53 Hatch handle probems
Hatch handle probems
Ive have this funny problem with my license plate lights since i got the car a few months ago, usually just one light would be on but sometimes both or none of them are on. but starting today my hatch started opening itself . . . very annoying. after taking off the handle and pouring all the water out i came online to see how common this is . . . apparently very common. my next question is where can i buy a new switch? i cant find them anywhere.
and any fixes so this doesn't happen again?

The switch part number is 51-47-7-114-536-BOE (for my '04S) and it's available from Pelican Parts online for $47.50. I use RealOEM.com to find all my Mini part numbers since they have the full detailed parts catalog online. I then use the part number in PelicanParts.com to actually order the part. I don't live anywhere near a Mini dealer so I must order everything online to save traveling expenses.

I purchased an 04 MCS in October and the license plate lights worked intermittently. It turns out the lights are corroded and the handle assembly needs to be replaced. I have heard from others this is fairly common in high mileage Coopers.
Make sure the rubber over the switch is not damaged and the handle gaskets are in place and sound. Any doubt replace them all to keep the water out!
We just talked about this in the other thread. Seems like the salt over the winter has taken its toll.
Gasket only:

Handle in chrome, we have them in primed version also.

The lens pop out over time due to age and then water gets in there and corrodes.

The whole handle is the way to go.
Thanks an let me know if you need anything else.

In my case, i was able to remove the handle, use some contact cleaner on the switch, and reinstall with some form a gasket...the oem foam gasket was pretty dead...but i was lucky, the rubber cover on the bottom if the switch/handle was ok....it it was failed, i would just het a new handle/replacemnt switch. So far the cleaning has kept it working for 3 years.....so i'm thinking the gasket allowed water yo wick into the switch area....
