Which fluid spec does the 5speed gearbox have?

My mini (06/2004 built) recently had it's gearbox replaced..apparently the Midlands original it used to have was crap, it now has the getrag 5spd..I love the getrags in my other cars, and shifting in the mini is great too. Question is, which fluid spec should I be using? Can I use BMW MTF-02 or do I need the newer MTF-03? Or something else? Thanks.

Sigh. How about no? I don't care what people say about it..I know a lot of guys in the BMW community are using it (and royal purple syrncromesh) with good short term results, but the jury is still out on long term results.

it's funny, a lot of guys comment that shifting feels better after flushing old oil and going with non-BMW recommended fluids, but obviously that isn't fair to compare old OE to new aftermarket...the only real comparison would be fresh OE to fresh aftermarket. And even then, you still don't know how it will fare over the longterm.

It's important to understand that just because it shifts smoother doesn't mean the gears are being lubricated better..

fixed content. I was just giving you a straight answer because noone else had already replied. There is no need for your **** of a reply.

What do you consider long term results? 10 years? Well you shouldn't have the same tranny fluid in your car unless you only did 1000 miles in 10 years. I would say running on tranny fluid for 60k miles or so is adequate to get a good estimate of performance long term. Do it again, then even more reason to stand by the first results. If you have 180,000 miles of history, then I would consider that long term. But, I have 200,000 miles on my jetta and have run MTL the whole time. I would say it performs rather well in the long term. Especially considering I every time i flush the tranny, there is little to no signs of significant wear on the tranny.

And i will have to differ with you regarding the shifting smoother bit. If you have two identical cars and one is oiled up real well, and the other is just moderately lubed, then it is expected the one that is oiled up real well would shift better and therefore be more lubricated than the latter.

OEM oil is expensive for what it is and is garbage. Companies spend lots of money and time researching and manufacturing higher quality oil for the same price or cheaper.

Just trying to offer my advice. No need to bring your unpleasantness into a blog.
