R50/53 AutoWeek Story: First Airbag Deployment in US
>>Welcome aqualung. That story is over a year old. It was, I believe, the first MCS deployment which is why it was newsworthy.
Ah, I thought so too, but isn't the article datelined Dec 5, 2003?

It shows the date and time when you opened it where the dateline would normally go, so it always seems new.

gotcha, sadly I got an RSS feed about an hour ago, which is what lead me to the article, so I guess it's "fooling" all of us. Anyway, I deleted my post, obviously irrelevant....

Old news for sure (and that dateline can't be correct as I was reading that article in the summer of 2002...).
Actually, what's more interesting are the growing number of stories about MINI airbags going off in less obvious situations...mostly when one wheel hits a hard object such as a curb or raised manhole cover. One of the MAs at my dealer told me yesterday how he lit all 6 airbags by hitting a raised manhole cover that was about 4" above road surface. $3500 insurance bill for the airbags, and no other damage to the car. And then the insurance weasels canceled his policy.
(he claims to have had no prior accidents).
