R50/53 MCS toggle switches
Find a nice, slick road surface; wait until it rains; then MASH the throttle as you take off... once with ASC "on", and once with it "off".
My MINI hasn't arrived yet, but on my Golf VR6, with the ASC "off", you'll get lots of wheel spin and the car will "hunt" left & right as it struggles to obtain traction. With the ASC "on", my car (Golf) will feel a little "restrained", but track straight & true; right at the limits of adhesion. The ASC (and particularly the DSC) do a lot more than "just" this, but it's one of the most "graphic" examples.
It's said (urban legend?
) that a "good" driver can go faster with ASC/DSC switched "off". This may be true if the driver is VERY attentive, or on a (closed) road course. However, if you have 160-180 HP on the FRONT wheels, and you hit a puddle as you make a quick right turn accelerating away from a stop sign.... ASC can save you a LOT of embarassment! ("... I MEANT to do that 180!"
