yep i cant stop em! i have now 48,000 miles on my 02 cooper s and have not had bad luck with this car till now! and thats if ya want to call it bad luck!

my first set of rear break pads where replaced at 36,000 miles this was found to be the rear calipers had locked up and burnt the pads to nothing, now they rebuilt the calipers and pute on new stuff, now 15,000 miles has passed and my new pads where gone again now less than half the miles on them, and when i took it to the dealer they said it was not a waranty repair so i paid to get it all done again, thou i think 15 thousand miles for rear pads is a bit thin, my queschin is, they repaired the pads and then this very loud squeel started, took it back they said my roters where glazed so they pute on new roters, still the squeel persists, now they told me they are not goting to spend any more time on the car unless im prepared to spend 90 dollers an hour for them to look at it, i dont have the money or time for them to dink with my car cause i think a hamster with a wrench could do a better job then their mechanics, does anyone know how to stop this high piched squeel its so loud and anoying and it makes the car look bad! any thoughts would be sooo helpfull, its all new in the rear , pads and roters but still the squeel

oh the insanity!!!

thanks to all

Spelling? what about "queschin" Try 'question' next time eh?

Anyway, down to business. Brake squealing is caused by rapid vibration of the pad against the caliper. It is a common ailment of all cars that has a simple solution. A type of gel is smeered on the back of the pad as it is inserted into the caliper. This lubricates the metal to metal contact and in most cases eliminates the squeal. Many brake pad sets include this gel in the box when you buy new pads.

If your dealership is incapable of fixing this, give it a go yourself. Head down to Autozone and explain what you want. Then armed with the gel jack up the car and remove the wheels, remove the pads and slap the gel on the back of the pad. It should take you about 15 minutes a wheel.

Technically there is nothing wrong with brakes that squeal. It's usually just because the pad is vibrating in the caliper bracket.Three of my 4 cars, including my cooper s do it.Go to your local auto parts store and buy some of the goo to go on the backside of the pads.Take out the pads and put a good coat on them, let them sit overnight. Then put them back in.If the pads/rotors are glazed you can lightly scuff them with some sandpaper before putting it back together. If you can't perform this job yourself, I am afraid you will have to deal with the hamsters.

Yes. The stuff you want is typically called "Anti Squeal Compound" or "Disc Brake Anti Squeal" -- something along those lines. Any large auto store should carry it. The stuff I use is bright orange. It works.

A word of advice: if at all possible, apply the compound to the pad backs and then let it sit to "cure" for at least 24 hours (even longer won't hurt). It takes quite a while for the goo to turn from sticky liquid to a semi-solid plastic-like compound. You don't want to put them on while the goo is still liquid, because it will just squeeze out and won't do anything for you.

Also, if you can get someone to stand outside your car (perhaps in an alley, or side-street for more quiet), you may be able to identify exactly which corner(s) the squeal is coming from. I would be surprised if it's from all four corners...

Good luck!

I think your problem is somebody "pute on new stuff" when they were rebuilding the calipers. No matter how good the quality of new stuff it does not work right with pute on it. It also causes rust if left on. Get it off and all should be fine.

Hop this halps and happy muttering!

P.S. I think we all mean this in good fun, but it is always good to re-read before hitting submit and you can edit if you post and see mistakes. I should knew.
