About three weeks ago a friend of mine took delivery of his first Mini, a classic 1975 Leyland, clubman I think, and he would like to know if there are any forums like NAM or Mini2 for the classic Mini. I have done a little bit of searching for sites on the web to no avail. Working with him to find things for his car is helping tide me over until my IB MCS arrives in April '04. Can anyone help us out by pointing us in the right direction?

Current project search:

We are trying to find out if it is possible to install a new heater in the car. The original carburator air intake was changed to a cone filter and he is going to be installing a Weber carb in the near future, once we find out what kind to get, and since the old heater worked with the old intake system, or something like that, he is getting only outside temperature air. In Oregon this time of year the air temp is starting to get pretty cold.

Help, please

Why go to a Weber? What is the engine & mods? A good single 1 3/4" SU is more than sufficient for up to 1380cc's. In testing the Weber doesn't offer all that you might think. It sounds like you all are inexperienced with classic Minis. Take your time to learn more before spending your cash. Go online above. Look at the tech threads. Ask questions. Buy some books (TUNING BL'S A-SERIES ENGINE by David Vizard) to learn what works best.

Most aftermarket intake manifolds for A series contain the H2O line although you can plumb around it. Depends on what motor & cylinder head your car has. Some late heads don't have the rear heater take off & valve, although you can drill it out & install one.

Hi, Jbing! ... there are a few classic Mini forums - usually combined with something else ... MiniMania has a 'discussion group' and MightyMiniz Inn has part of their forum dedicated to Classics but there's not much traffic there ...

The Heater was always fed hot water from the head and returned it to the stream just before the thermostat ... some intake manifolds had a tube thru which that return stream passed to heat the induction (so you didn't need to leave the choke on so long at start-up) but most manifolds just had a tube next to them instead of cast into them; Continue to circulate that water to the heater core where ever it is convenient and don't worry about having it pass next to the carb or intake manifold.
The Mini's of that vintage also had a fresh-air delivery system that had two or three trunks passing from just behind the grill to the cabin - one of those trunks also fed fresh air to the heater unit, where it would pass through the heater core, but the other paths just shot outside (Cold!) air at your chest ...

... also, when changing to the Webber, try to go with the DCOE and not the downdraft econo-version DGV's ...

Opps! ... almost forgot to mention that the Oregon Mini Society (mainly PDX area and south) has a bunch of Miniacks that would love to talk Mini's with you all day ...
