05 MCS... fan running after ignition off

I test drove a used Mini Cooper S today. Everything was fine, but after I turn off the engine after about 15 minutes of normal driving, a fan (of some kind, a whining noise) was kept running after 10 minutes or so even after I pulled the key out. The owner recycled the ignition, and it was turned off.

What kind of problem is this? Is it something that is pretty common in Mini? (e.g., Many people had the same problem and easy fix solution has been found)

It is not necessarily a problem, since the fan is intended to run if the coolant temperature warrants it whether the motor is running or not. However, there have been problems with the low speed resistor, so you should have it checked out.

If it's just normal driving, then as the above poster noted, the low speed resistor in your relay has fried and you need a new rad fan. Mine just went out a couple of weeks ago and it's not fun.

Is it difficult to replace? I checked Ebay for a mini radiator fan, and a new unit runs about $120.

If I put new radiator fan, Coolant flush and New thermostat, then would this problem be fixed?

i have a 2004 mcs. its done it to me like 3 times but only on really hot days. it was because there was a lot of stop signs thought i think. it did eventually go off and i haven't seen a problem so i just left it alone. I had the dealer check my car out (extended warranty) and all they did was change the valve and pan gaskets ($600!) so i guess its normal in my case. Good Luck!

it is pretty common. i had it happen around 25k (now at 78k on my '03 MCS) they replaced the fan then under warranty. Started happening again earlier this summer (late June) called Morristown MINI service and they toldme to check the coolant level before bringing it in to see how that works. And it did!!! Fan has not stayed on since i added some official MINI coolant. Good luck!!!
