3K "Stumble"?

Hi Everyone,

Been lurking for a while.

I have an '06 R53 S JCW, that's had a little problem since I got it.

At right about 3,000 RPM, there's a little stumble, or hole, in acceleration.

Just for about 1/2 second, but you can feel it.

I talked to the dealer about it, and they replaced the throttle body, but it didn't help.

One thing to note is that I am at high altitude (10,000 ft), if that makes any difference.

Anyone had this kind of problem?

I'm going to add a Amsoil filter, but I/m pretty sure it's not air volume related.

Thanks!

How many miles on the car? Are the spark plugs in good shape? Is the drive belt stretched out?

32k miles. Not sure on the plugs, I should check that out. Don't think the belts are loose.

After more research, I'm wondering if it's the BPV, and thinking I should either take it apart to adjust the stops and stretch the spring, or just go the Detroit Tuned BPV route.

Is this the same as what people are calling "yo-Yo"

HESITATION

Is it like a pinging sound and slight hesitation in power?
I had that problem, then moved to PA where there is 93 octane, and after couple of week it went away. Then came back to CA and after less than a week of 91 octane (thats the highest in CA) it began again. Prior 04 MCS had it since birth, DTBPV did not solve it, nor did plugs, wires, coil cap it just lived with it. After I got back I wanted to see if it was the gas, but there was no 93 obviously, but the next town over had 100 octane. I tried that for 10 days at $7.95 a gallon plus no card use policy, it has to be payed cash. After my 2 tank fill-up it went away, I did like 4 full top offs of the stuff. I started to mix 91 and it still ran strong, my next tank full of 91 ran good until the last 1/4 of tank and it began again.

My #1 recommendation these days when folks are having weird, hard to diagnose problems.... find some friends in the local MINI club, poor your nickels, and buy a copy of AutoEnginuity with the BMW extensions... data logging will let you see what's REALLY happening and give you a lot more clues to work with, and prevent the "just replace parts until something works" approach... you don't have to prevent many wasted parts to pay for the scantool...

Thanks guys, good idea. They have 91 octane here, and it's usually a "winter Blend" whatever than means. Plus less oxygen and air pressure up here.

No pinging, just a slight hesitation at just over 3,000 RPM. Does not matter what gear or how fast I'm going. Off the line or at 60 mph

I had the same issue and it was aggrovated more after I added the Detroit Tuned BPV. There are more than a few cases of Minis with flat spots in the tuning around 3k.

Jan from RMW was able to tune the issue out of my car and now the lag at 3k is gone.
