R50/53 *Wrecked* Mini Vs. Suburban
glad to hear that you are well, and that the MINI held up to its specs.
what a story... This is definitely one to have my parents (former GMC Suburban owners, but their cars are getting smaller all the time: aerio, minivan, bravada) and freinds who are convinced that the car is a "death trap."
i dont need to convince anyone about what this car is necessarily, but no one likes a worried mother...
Again; glad to hear you are ok. hope that 'burban owner will rehab' ok... and think about buying a mini.

I'll say I'm happy you were able to walk away, Kesh. Watch out for stiffness tomorrow, though. After both of my accidents, I felt fine the day of, but got a little shoulder stiffness from where the seatbelt held me back. Fortunately, I was in the drivers seat and I'm right handed, so no big deal. A couple of Advil and I was fine.
And I could not agree with Greatbear more. There are many people that think an airbag is an adequate substitute for a seatbelt and this proves that is not the case. Wear 'em!

Good call on the stiffness. in fact, its always a REALLY good idea to go to a hospital; or to the doctors the day of or day after an accident. Even if you FEEL ok, problems can develop and this way, its documented taht you've been going to the doctor as a result of the accident.
in this case, should you need to pursue legal recourse against the suv driver, you are on much more solid ground.
Just dont abuse the system like so many numskulls and sue for damages just because u can. That happened to my mother, the insurance company had to pay 60,000 to a guy that HIT US because he had false witnesses and fake back pain...
thats another story, haha.

Wow, glad to know you are ok...
Mike Preist told me that a 50+ year old couple in a Mini did a head on or a t-bone (I forget wich) with a Cevrolet Caprice Classic.
The driver of the Chevy was still in the hospital on the tenth day after when the driver and passenger of the Mini were in Downtown Mini making arrangements to purchase a replacement for their Mini. One had a broken rib, but was still up and about.
Got to admit, I hope to not get in an accident in ANY car, but I really hate to think I'll be safer in my Mini than my Bronco, though I walked away from rolling a Bronco before.
Funny note on that: The first officer to the scene was in a Bronco and asked me like 3 times "No I need to speak to the driver of the Bronco..." I simply told him "Don't you feel a little better about the vehicle you are patrolling in?"
Oh, as a word to the wise; When your vehicle is on it's roof, put your hand against the ceiling BEFORE releasing the seat belt...

Kesh, I join with everyone else in thanking you for sharing this amazing story. It is great to hear that everything worked the way it was supposed to and kept you from serious harm! Obviously, you were strapped in and that allowed the airbags to do their job. I am concerned about the amount of damage the MINI sustained. With the fact that all of the suspension parts were damaged, was there any damage done to the sub-frame? Is it possible to have the insurance company total the car? I would personally prefer this to repairing such extensive damage! Maybe you can get MINI USA to purchase the car to use as a demo piece for driver safety! Again, we are all glad to hear that you were able to walk away from this with nothing more than a story to tell...
Kesh, glad to hear to you are safe and sound  Rest assured that by the time the insurance adjuster finds out how much it is to replace each one of the curtain roof airbags in your car ($2K to $4K a pop) not including the rest of the repairs your car will be totalled and I sincerely I hope it is. You don't want to get back a taped up car. No matter how good the bodyshop is, your car will never be the same.

kesh....
awww man, i really really know how you feel.
i'm glad to hear that you're ok and not very surprised after my accident.
i am very surprised that they are not going to total your car though.
my car had very similar damage, but the sub frame crumpled and a few other different things.
please see a doctor for sure, it will be covered by the other drivers insurance and will set you up for any claims.
let us know any developments and news regarding your sad accident.
take care.

Kesh,
Glad to hear you are ok. Having been in car accidents before I would strongly suggest you go to a hospital and have them check you out.
I would recomend the car be totaled as well, Cat in Houston spent over 50 days waiting for her car to be fixed properly. Even then it wasn't the same.
Look at this as an opportunity to get any of the options you decided you wanted after you had the car.
On behalf of the SoCal MINI Maniacs I wish the best to you and your family and to the driver of the Subrban I hope they have a speedy recovery and this has helped them learn seatbelts save lives.

Glad to hear that you didn't have any injuries.
Did the suburban rollover?
I'm curious as to what it was like to experience the side curtain airbags? I would think that it would be quite shocking...? I'm sure everything happened so fast. Any comments?

Wow that really sucks! I'm glad your OK, its good that our minis are engineered so well and can take a crash like that. I've been in some close calls with a few SUVs and trucks. Just another reason I think they should take them off the road...
Still not an ache or any soreness from the wreck. I am perfectly fine.
Insurance company will only total the car if the repairs greater than 80% of the value of the car. Mini is worth $21,800, estimated cost to fix the car ~10K.
Fingers crossed.

Glad you are OK. What an amazing story. We've planning on "upgrading" (changing out) our Suburban (don't need as big a vehicle anymore now that both kids are out of the house) and your story reminds us to consider the various safety aspects of the next vehicle we purchase.
Take care and best regards,

Oh Kesh, really sorry to hear your story!
Glad though that you are ok, and that your MINI sacrificed itself for you.
MINI did it's job, and your story is just another one about how well engineered MINIs are, and how safe they are.
I hope you get all your stuff sorted out and can get back to motoring asap!
All the Best!

Sorry to hear about your mishap, but what do I always say about them SUV's-they need to stay off-road. It's stories like this that help support my anti-suv campaign.
If SUV's drive you mad, please make a statement and click on this link to my website for a MINI anti-SUV t-shirt, only $12.00. http://www.miniantisuv.com
Motor on.

Whoa, thats a crazy story. Glad you're OK. That sucks for the guy driving the suburban. I wonder if he had the "MINI is a deathtrap and my SUV is safer" mentality before the accident. For some reason when he said he didn't see you, I think he's gonna blame it on the fact that the MINI is so small.
>>Sorry to hear about the accident, but I am glad you are unharmed. Cars can always be replaced. Make sure you apply the SUV "sticker" to your front door. You earned it!

Does anyone have a Suburban Bogie sticker that you can send me? I lost mine when I moved from St. Pete to Tampa. I think my Mini deserves it.

Which, of course, is total crap. The MINI is just as visible from the front as a Jetta or a Civic, or any other smallish car. It's just short in length. It may sound harsh, but I think the Suburban driver got what he deserved. There's just no excuse for that kind of behavior. Hopefully a few months on crutches will drive a lesson into his brain.
So glad to hear you're OK! Thanks so much for sharing the story.

Very glad to hear you are OK after being attacked by such a irresponsibly huge vehicle. That is a great story though - showing how unsafe those monsters really are.
The Suburban driver (and any other SUV driver) should read the book "SUVs - The World's Most Dangerous Vehicles and How They Got That Way". Sad thing is they'll probably run out and buy another SUV.
Hope you're back motoring soon!
