First things first, please people, be careful lifting your cars. Don't put any part of yourself under there until it is secured on jackstands. I was uninjured because I followed that simple but important rule.

Since I posted this whole story on another board, I'll link you there, I dont have the energy to write it all out agiain and I will only be updating in the one place.gromit's jackpoint failure

I think that the only thing you have going in your favor is the fact that although the jackpoints are intended for usage with the offical MINI jack, the MCS does not come with the jack, theirfor causing a problem. The manual says use the jackpoints. So you used the jackpoints with a jack.

Personally, I wouldn't have used the jackpoints w/out the proper jack, but as you just followed the manual, and the intent of the design (why make a specific jackpoint if you are not given the offical jack, something that comes with pretty much ever other car), they really should 'help out' to some extent. Just wait untill someone gets injured and a class action suit starts. That's something they'd probally have trouble winning...

whether mini provides a jack or not, the car will eventually be lifted by a conventional hydraulic jack when being serviced. the dealer may have a special lifting device made for mini, but by no means can we assume that all lifting will be done by the dealer...or does "motor on" mean "within dealer range?"

Ahhhhh....but less we forget, this is BMW, and it seems that they have/require a "special tool" for just about everything (I have a 1972 3.0 and it's almost comical how many special tools the manual specifies).

But seriously, unless Gromit's MINI was just one-off defective in its jackpoints (which given the uniformity of problems we see reported on this site, this seems unlikely), this is something we all need to be concerned with. I'd like to keep both of my legs AND be able to change over my own tires!
