I just got home from one of my favorite local watering holes. As I was leaving my cozy place for an after work drink, I spied a white w/ checkerboard roof original Mini parked right behind my '03 PW/B MINI Cooper.
I have to say that despite reading many posts re: problems w/ various individual's MINIs, that moment of glee in seeing my Panda MINI "keeping company" with an adorable original Mini just highlighted why I love owning this car so much. We are not just car owners, we are owners that love our cars!
So, as I stood admiring the scene before my eyes, a gentleman standing on the sidewalk having a cigarette asked me which car I thought was cuter. My response was, "I hate to admit it, but I think the original is cuter and that comes from the owner of this MINI." The gentleman responded, "Well I agree with you, and this is my Mini." I went on to ask if he would be willing to trade keys for a spin around the block, but sadly, he declined.
Well, suffice it to say that I had a nice chat w/ the Mini owner and we agreed that we both had great taste in cars. His only criticism of the MINI was that it was too big
He also noted that my PW/B combination was great because of it's resemblance to a good black & tan. I have to agree!
All I can say is this little interaction made my day. Just wanted to share a nice little MINI-Mini moment.

Sounds like some of the classic owners are starting to accept the New MINI. Glad to see that and great story.

Had a bit of MINI meets mini myself lately. Driving up to Portland, I hooted at my wife to look over at the southbound lanes. There was a car carrier going by- get this: it was FULL of classic minis!! I was so tempted to jump the median and follow it to find out where they were all headed. Grinning from ear to ear, I continued on. About 15 minutes later, I look in my rear view mirror, and there's a strange kind of orange car behind me. I slow up, and sure enough, complete w/ a right hand steering wheel, is another classic mini. I slow to let the driver pull alongside, and we're both thumbs up. Great feeling. Now I REALLY want one to keep my '03 company.

I don't know about other parts of the country but in Colorado the classic MINI owners have always been kind and open to the new MINI's. Many of them now have a New MINI. What was determined as the classic MINI club, MOTR, has become a mix of new and classic owners. I have to admit that I prefer the mixed club. The guys and gals are crazy about both cars and so am I. Besides they remind of Renn Faire people, eccentric.
They know that it is the new MINI that has raised interest in the classic and the resale value of them. We've been watching but the classic MINI's have been increasing in price.
Great story above too!

Fortunately, I get to see both MINIs and Minis here in Germany almost everyday. I scour the used Minis looking for one old enough to bring back to the states, so far no luck though.
My MINI has made me want a Mini now!!!
Excellent story!

Kdog, Your best bet on getting a classic MINI in the states will be to go to a place that specializes in it such as the MINI Guy and Turkeys. There is a thread about getting a classic here. They can also tell you what to look for over there and what you have to do to bring one here.
