Intermittent fuel gauge

Emily is a 2002 MCS with less than 35,000 trouble-free miles.
Last night as I was tooling home comtemplating the state of the economy, I notice the low-fuel light come on. There were 96 miles on the trip-meter. As I watched, the needle dropped to the bottom, indicating dead-empty. I scrolled through the computer display gizmo to "elapsed miles", and it displayed -----.
I did this a couple of times, all to no positive effect.
When I got home, I shut the car off, and waited a minute or so, then turned the ignition back on.
Bingo. Back to normal.
My question is; Is this indicative of a pending problem, or just one of those wierd little idiosyncracies that crop up now and then?
Has anyone else run into this?
Thanks for your input.

My '02 does this from time to time -- usually shortly after filling the tank. It has always come back. I believe that there are others threads discussing this issue as well.

Thanks.
I did a quick search prior to posting but found nothing useful.

It's usually the sensor in the fuel tank on the passenger side.
