Yep, I'm still around. And I still have a box of the sheet metal screws and a bag of the plastic "Tee ****" thumb screws sitting on the shelf.

I must have deleted my installed photo, but here is a shot of the two components which comprise the latch.

Easy fix.

Doug's wing nut works perfectly! I just put mine on. It is like the way your armrest worked when your car was brand new. Well, for the first hour or so anyway, till it got loose and sucked. Didn't realize how much it sucked till I finally fixed it. We have developed an automatic move where we get in the car and give an unconscious elbow shove to close it, then carefully lay our arm down on it, elbow first, slowly relaxing and applying pressure till the wrist makes contact, then consciously avoiding relaxing and always keeping a forward pressure on it.

Screw that. Do this. Just lean on the armrest. It works now. If you have an armrest, do this. Get it from doug or the parts site yourself, but do this.

That is all.

Hey Doug I really appreciate you finding (and contributing) a simple and helpful fix for the armrest issue!

Just wanted to say thanks is all!

Hey guys- Sorry to bump such an old thread. I'm the thrilled owner of a new (to me) 2008 Cooper S Cabrio- Sidewalk edition (with factory limited slip!). One of the most annoying features so far is the poorly designed arm rest. Is anyone able to help with a fix? I will send Paypal, thank you.

I don't have an armrest in mine and have been considering getting one for long trips but holy smokes are they expensive.

I bought the $200 armrest for my '04 R53 because it never had one. Really a nice unit

My '06 R52 has the factory armrest that's broken, I saw another thread in here where someone put a couple of little piano hinges under the upper part and made the lid open up sideways, that's my plan this winter for mine

Bryan, possible to share a link for that? It sounds like a brilliant solution

If you are having the issue with armrest cover not staying closed, one fix is to replace the cover. Don’t need to buy the entire armrest, the covers are sold separately. Available in both leather and leatherette.

i’ve done this twice now (two different cars) and good as new.

I couldn't find the link real quick....but I did save the picture, pretty self explanatory....I have the hinges here for mine, just have not put them on yet....other things on the car have had higher priority
