2004 Cooper S power steering
Help!
My power steering works intermittently. When I start the car in the morning it is fine. But if I turn the car off and then restart shortly after that (like getting gas) the power steering does not work. If the car sit for an hour or so, the power steering will work again.
Any tricks or is it time for a new pump?
Thanks

when I bought my car from the original owner he told me these cars were legendary for their power steering problems. He had the whole thing done for like $2200-2400. I think its one of the reasons he sold the car, power steering and the drivers side window motor broke right after he bought the car.
I had a ton of steering sys problems with my long-gone R53. First thing Id check is the fluid-- if there is little or none and there's no evidence of leakage then U have a blown steering rack (O-ring inside the bellows, gives way, and it fills up with fluid) and need to get it in asap before the bellows explodes like a water balloon. If OK, then it's prob the pump. Both are expensive fixes; I went thru two racks on my 05 and it was like $1,300 each (warranty chargebacks.)
smartest thing BMW ever did was dumping that problematic electrohydraulic PS system for an all-electric system.
