HELP- Does anybody know what METRIC size 6-sided/point socket is needed to change the oil filter on the new Cooper? Looks to be between 32-35mm. Has anyone changed the oil themselves yet and know EXACTLY which size to use? I want to order the metric socket so I can change it myself. MINI USA was NO HELP!

Many Thanks!

The oil filter cartridge requires a 36mm socket. Get a shallow socket since there is not much clearance under there. I got a 2" 36mm socket from NAPA along with a short handle 1/2" socket wrench.

Search for oil change on this site and you will find great tips on the oil change process...

You may want to leave the break oil in the car until the owners manual states to change it

THANK YOU SO MUCH, Redbird73! It's even larger than I figured. I'll try NAPA auto parts tomorrow. I went to several hardware/tool stores and it's hard enough to find metric let alone something that large. Thanks for the tips. It's been 4,400 miles and it is definitely time to change the oil. I am going to do it every 5k miles, that way the dealership will cover half of the oil changes (the ones they do). I crawled under there and it's gonna be pretty easy to drain this baby. Thanks again!

Redbird73 is correct, it is a 36mm socket. the drain plug is 13mm. Here's they way I do it. Warm up the engine, remove filler cap, remove drain plug, slightly loosen the filter canister. Let it all drain out. Remove the filter canister, replace the filter and "O" ring. Install canister, replace drain plug. Put in 4 quarts, replace filler cap, start engine and run for a moment. Stop engine and check oil, topping up to required level. Check for leaks and you're done. I change mine at 3k intervals. Have fun and Motor On. MB

You may want to read the article in Car and Driver 11/2000. It is posted in 'under the bonnet.' I did my first change on my Cooper @ 4000 miles and at 1000 on the S. I may switch to Mobil One or Amsoil with the next change @ 3000. I drive hard, used to race and believe in oil changes...synthetic or not. Interesting my BMW motorcycle recommends regular 20/50 for the first 20,000 then switching to synthetic.
