Keyless Entry?

I tried a search, but didn't find what I am looking for.

I bought my '02 R53 (CR/W) on Saturday, but the dealer (independent) didn't have the remote key. My question is - is it possible my car did not come equipped with keyless entry? I don't want order a remote key, only to find it doesn't work with my car.

Please, any suggestions or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

I'm pretty sure it's a standard feature. If you did want to order the key, you'd have to go through a MINI dealer, who without a doubt would be able to inform you if your car was so equipped once they ran your VIN.

Yep, all new MINIs have remote entry. Amazing that somehow both keys got lost along the way.

It looks like a remote key, but doesn't have the actual buttons. I'm not sure if that's the valet key or not. Yeah, it's amazing how both remote keys get lost. Of course, the Audi I traded in had both remote keys and the valet key. Why would people keep them?!?! Kinda' like the owners manuals. How the heck do they get lost too?

Thanks guys. I'll stop by the dealer and see what they say.

Mike

Are sure its not just a dead battery? I've never heard of a non remote key which isn't the skinny key.

Here is the key. It doesn't appear to have a 'button' at all. Does this mean my car may have come without keyless entry?

Again, thanks for all of the help!

When I got my car, it didn't come with the valet key (undoubtedly lost by the original owner,) but it did come with a remote key AND the plain key that looks just like the remote key, except there aren't any buttons on it, which Mini S in SC has pictured above.

I have an 04 s with remote entry key but the remote entry does not work... I tried the reset options in the manual...come to find out it didn't come with the car... just FYI
Edit: yes I replaced the battery in the key as well (can't do that in a non-remote key can ya!)

How'd you replace the remote key batt? I'm pretty sure mine is dying cause it doesn't work unless you're right on top of the car. I can't seem to see how to open the black part of the key.

Who told you your car did not come with "remote keyless entry"? Me thinks they are blowing a bit of smoke ......

This was a standard feature on my 02 and on every MINI since to the best of my knowledge. In fact there are a number of programmable features on a GEN1 tied to the keyless entry system; all the auto door opening, window closing stuff. It is listed as a standard feature on my 02 window sticker.

Now as another has stated my 02 DID come with one remote access key, and another 'plain key' .... it does not have the remote open button at all. That soon changed however..as soon as the 03 I believe.

So what should I expect to pay to have a key cut and the remote programmed to my car? Should I try to buy an uncut key and then have it cut and programmed, or just get the dealer to do it all?

Thanks,
Mike

The options listing I got from another member (vincheck) The key has the pushable mini button and a lock button, I have replaced the batt twice, it lights up when pressed(taken apart) I have done the reset according to both methods in the book, reset the battery... I have looked where there would be an alarm/remote entry box or reciever and there is not one there ipso facto no remote entry.

I didn't think it was an option. I've ordered two MINIs and "remote entry" was not an option on either one. I went down the full page checklist on each one and I never had to select that option. I've never seen a MINI without keyless. Sounds to me like someone lost their keys and didn't want to pay for a new one and then passed the cheaper replacement on to you.

I also just looked on Edmunds, Intellichoice and a few others and keyless is listed as standard for every year.

I know it's the correct key and I have two workable buttons with a battery inside... I have replaced the fuses, reset the car batt... nothing. I just don't think it works if it is there.

I have the same problem! Only one key with no buttons. I called the MINI dealer in San Antonio, TX (Nov 25, 2008) and they told me that after running a check on my Vin# the price was $219.00 for the remote key (per key). They told me that it included the cutting. He then told me that they had to program the key. I wonder how is it to program the key?
