R50/53 First Post: You’d think I learn.
We bit the bullet last night and put in an order for a Mini Cooper S, Indi Blue, black top/stripes and three packages. Estimated delivery: February/March.
Two years ago this month we placed an order for the popular car of the year. I made a similar post on the enthusiast’s forum the next day. I shared the wait with others as we discussed best colors, gas mileage, first songs and other expectations. And thanks to the wonders of the Internet, I know what afternoon the car was painted, I know what time of day the car (railroad) passed across the Texas/Mexico border and when our car arrived in New Jersey.
Was the wait worth it? YES!
Am I even more excited and eager to get the Mini S? YES!!!!
Here we go again.

So what kind of car was that? Made in Mexico... New Bug (pardon my possible ignorance of most things VW)?
Since you were able to track the day the car was painted, they must have had a MINI-esque online tracking system. Was it any more accurate than MINI's? Just wondering...

100 miles down the road from the VW plant in Mexico; another German giant has a plant that exclusively makes PT Cruisers for Daimler/Chrysler. Once you get the car's build number, DC has an interactive voice system that gives you a status code. Out of the factory the last status would give you a railroad car number, which you can use to track its progress with the various railways (Union Pacific and CSX) tracking systems.
It was a fun way to ease the waiting time. I'm looking forward to tracking the MINI S as it swims the Atlantic.

Congradulations on your order! We too will also be a PT and Mini family. Love the Cruiser! And now it will have a Mini friend. I get to order mine next month!!
