VIN Plate damage

So, I thought I'd ask this here since it seems a little strange. My MINI is in the shop to get a new windshield. They've said that the windshield glue from a previous replacement has gotten on the VIN plate and therefore they have to replace the VIN plate since it will most likely be damaged when the pull the windshield off. Does this make sense?

It causing major delays for me getting the car back!

Why not pull it off and see if it dammages the plate...then if needed replace the plate...

unless they can not keep the MINI indoors during the time it takes to get the new plate....

seems odd to me...

It is VERY difficult (legally) to replace a vin plate. As far as I know you must have someone from the proper agency present or to actually do the swap. Removing a vin plate (I believe) is a federal offence.

It's the local dealership, so I think that's ok.

What is surprising to me though, is that they say that removing the windshield might damage the plate since it has windshield adhesive on it. I thought the VIN plate was metal!
