R50/53 DYNAMIC STABILITY CONTROL (DSC)
After reading posts etc. I've decided to NOT get the sunroof. So...I did a search about the DSC and I couldn't find a post with that title.
It costs $500. I'd like to know just what it is, and if *someone* else has purchased it, how they like it (or don't like it) and if they feel it was worth the money.

DSC: Dynamic Stability Control. (optional on both the Cooper and Cooper S) The system uses sensors to measure the steering angle, yaw and lateral acceleration to determine the direction you want to go. Then, if the actual path of your MINI starts to stray from the path you intended, the DSC system will kick in by applying the right amount of brake pressure to individual wheels and manipulating the engine torque. To sum up: DSC keeps you on the road. However the laws of physics do apply and will win if pushed too hard. Lets try to keep them straight.
Brownielocks,
Hope this helps.

There have been quite a few threads on this. Try this one DSC -- Do I Need This? for a start.
Seems to me that DSC is a good choice for most drivers, but possibly NOT those at two ends of the spectrum...i.e., those who are very conservative and will never push the laws of physics (that Sfiveten mentions), and those who intend to on a regular basis. The former group has a high liklihood of never requiring DSC and the latter may want to turn it off often. But for everyone else, it could be $500 to save your life and your car.

Lest we dismiss DSC as a "gimmick", most of the new, high-performance sportscars have it either standard, or as an option. Including BMW, Porsche, and even the new Ferrari "Enzo" (<$1M of sportscar). There are a number of different names (ASR, ASC, DSC...), and sometimes the capabilities overlap; but generally the automotive press speaks very highly of these systems (and, of course, most can be disabled; but that is mainly for failure modes like towing, being stuck in sand, ...or "playing"
.
Reading the fine print of MINI's brochures, BMW has taken the electronic fuel injection and the ABS brake electronics, and used them to achieve a level of traction control in their ASC. DSC takes this system, adds additional sensors (detection of yaw & lateral acceleration vs steering angle, etc), software, and provides enhanced stability over a wide range of circumstances. Especially if you are considering an MCS, DSC is a worthwhile option.
(ps: the Sept '02 issue of EVO has a good description of Ferrari's "ASR" (roughly equivalent to DSC), as used on their new "Enzo". Good description of the value of the system. ALSO; added bonus: Comparison test of MINI Cooper S vs Civic Type-R, and SEAT Cupra R (kind of a Spanish turbo Jetta). Very good review of the MCS).

Thanks Everyone!
I guess I should have looked it up via the initials and not the whole title?
I've read some of the stuff and I *think* I'll go for it.
All these options and choices in buying this car!
DECISIONS, DECISIONS, DECISIONS!

Just get them all
, I went for everything but leather and the nav system on mine, I was told on Friday my car would be a 2003, not a 2002 due to a delay in the order, I'm thinking of adding the HK stereo too.
