using these techniques makes a big difference indeed!

on the highway in 6th I now stay under 3k rpm (70mph) - the energy required to move my little brick through the air increases as the square of the speed, it is not linear

shortshifting, featherfooting, skipping gears, looking ahead - all have contributed to my average mileage jumping from 26mpg (300 miles 'till a fill as I don't run it down all that low) all the way to 33mpg (360 miles on 11 gals)

as I drive about 20k miles a year, my savings annually are in the order of $700 dollars (assumes $4.20 per gal)

what I don't do, is slow down for the corners much... what I do do (doo-doo?) is stay closer to the speed limits than I used to...

considering that the fun factor for me is cornering, I give up very little fun for one heck of a savings.

on my current tank I just hit the halfway mark with 270 miles traveled...on a refill I came up with 307.5 miles traveled on 9.48 gallons, for 32.4 mpg

of course the Mini gas guage is pretty special - mine records about two thirds of the actual fuel used as the "upper half" and the remaining third as the "lower half"

I have had a lot of success with accelerating quickly through 1st and 2nd then going straight to 4th or 5th. I am at 31mpg avrg and I do mostly city driving, plus mods.

I shift 1 - 2 - 3 - 6 on the street. From 1 - 2 - 3 I shift at 2,750 RPMS. to go from 3 - 6, I switch gears a little above 3rd.

6 is a perfect ECONOMICAL cruising gear

Charlie,

If I didn't know it, I would have sworn that you & I have nearly identical driving patterns with the same results & data. Good post!
