R50/53 Planning Mini Event- Your ideas?
What makes for a great gathering of Mini owners? We are planning an October 4 motocross event in South Bend, IN, with The Tire Rack. As we put the details in place, I'm wondering what needs to be included. Those who've attended Mini meets already, what made it a good event for you?
Details, details, details. Of course we all need a lot of MINIs. But you need good food, maybe a good restaurant stop or some sag wagon guy to do the BBQ grilling. Lots of noticing time, handout stuff like t-shirts, vinyl peel off decals, manufacturer support with goodies for raffle. A good road map and enticing writeup for a good hook. Ready, get set .....
Got the food covered... I'm the sales and marketing director for the area's most favorite Mexican restaurants, (since '78). We'll put out a big spread. How about mod reps?

Make sure there is some spirited driving included in the meet. We all like to ooh and aah at the MINIs but at meets where there is little or no driving, it can get old just talking about mods and wheels and faults and fixes.
Prizes are always nice. Fun categories like most bugs on the bonnet, dirtiest wheels, furthest distance travelled, most color coordinated enthusiast, etc.
Photo ops. Plan out a few stops where the MINIs can smile and say cheese.
Name tags. Real name and MCO (or MINI2) username. It's cool to finally put faces to the names we see here all the time.
A MINI autox "fun" course. Just set up a few cones and let everyone do their thing. No need for timing or helmets or changing tire pressure. Kinda like a miniature golf course.
2 way radios are a must. It makes such a difference in how the ride goes. Just remind everyone to bring them.
Wish I lived closer. This is destined to be one HUGE party.
Cheers,
Kim

We need that our next meet!!! Doing that by myself at an abandoned parking lot in them middle of the night is getting kinda risky

All great ideas, thanks. We will have a motorcross course-- banked track, cones, countdown lights and timers. All Mini owners have got to want to test their cars and driving skills. This is gonna be great!
CooperBeagle having organized a few fun-runs myself, here's some points to take into consideration.
1- Motoring is what most new MINI owners love to do. Have roads planned out and have a basic idea of some good points to break and/or eat at.
2a- Be flexible with time. Nothing will end up going the way you exactly plan it...give adequate time for bench racing, stories, potty breaks, fuel stops, meal breaks, and general chit-chat.
2b- Be flexible with routes. Nothing will end up going the way you exactly plan it...
3- Be sure you have a way to comm if you get separated. Try 2-way radios. Cell Phones. Etc. Be sure to put someone in front and someone in the back to help keeping the cars together.
4- Frequenty stops to gather back in the stragglers. Also gives a great time for people to talk with eachother (see 2a). Use these as navigational "way-points".
5- Nothing will go as planned. So stay relaxed. Stay prepared for the unexpected. Take things in an easy-going manner...or else no one will have fun. Fun is the reason for the MINI, right?

Here's my 2 cents
initial Hotel, Motel ( have everyone stay at the same one).
day 1
plan trip, senic and fun too! with plenty of stops to ckeck on the Hops and Barley.
If the crowd is big enough Rent some Cops!
they will hold traffic at the lights in town!! this will turn heads! as the MINIs parade on through. I was in Glen Falls NY with a MBG club that did this, it was great!
Day 2 , rent parking lot for your cones, see who comes in best. also have a show
best modded, best looking, longest miles driven etc.
wish I could be there
Keep on Motoring!
