R56?? What does this mean?

This is obviously a "newbie" question. I just got a 2008 Mini Cooper S and I started reading this forum and keep seeing R56, R53, and such, I gather it has something to do with the year model from context. Could someone explain to a "newbie"?

Im pretty sure it has to do with the Chassis code. Like my 2002 Civic's chassis code is EP3, Same thing... I think.

Why were the 2007+ Cooper and Cooper S given the same code---R56?

It'd be more correct to ask why the R50 and R53 were given different codes despite having the same chassis

Just look at the BMW's and their chassis codes....

you can get the E30 3-series or the faster E30 M3.....even with the faster engine, the M3 was still considered an E30

I don't know exactly...it wasn't that way w/ the first gen. I suppose R56 Cooper and R56 MCS have to do... but depending what we're discussing folks do forget to specify and it does get confusing.

Perhaps it has to do with the manner in which they were developed and how that was accomplished organizationally.

Yah probably...just not sure what was different about the earlier models. They shared the same chassis....so one would initially assume that they'd have the same code.

Based on all of the previous BMW models....it was common practice to use the same chassis code even if the engine setup or suspension setup was different...as long as it was the same chassis setup. They did, however, designate new codes to wagon or coupe variants....much like the clubman or cabrios receiving new numbers.

A look into the BMW code history: http://www.twinkidneygrill.com/codes.html

I wonder what the R stands for....anyone know? Is it Rover?
