rad fan upgrade?

was not getting anywhere on my other thread, i guess it was the title. i need a new radiator fan for my MCS. it is blowing the fan fuse when plugged in, not plugged in fuse fine, so it is pulling too many amps. have prices from about $250 to $315 for new one from dealer. $125 or so for a junkyard one.

are they prone to probs?

is there a good aftermarket one? it has been my experience that sometimes you can replace things with aftermarket stuff ceaper or equal that will outperform the OE.

I'm on #3

Just put in #3 last week. Altho painful to the pocketbook....having the dealer do it came with a 2 year warranty on that part.....

I think they call that rationalization

There are no drop-in replacements that I'm aware of, but the aftermarket is full of generic fans that can probably be fitted. Note that there is a relay and control circuit mounted on the shroud along with the motor and fan, this would have to be worked into the new setup. The stock setup is very low profile, you would have to take measurements to make sure anything you want to retrofit will fit into the available space. Also, the fan and shroud currently in the car is asymmetrical, and most aftermarket fan setups are symmmetrical or unshrouded. Unshrouded fans do not provide the same amount of airflow over the radiator as do shrouded fans.

Now, which fuse is burning out? If it's one of the big 30amp or bigger fuses, it's the radiator fan. If it's the small 5 amp fuse, it's the problematic power steering fan.

50 amp. under the hood with the relays. is there something that i am not thinking of?

if i was to fit something else then i would fit it in the existing shroud, and make it work with whatever relays there are. i know there are different wiring scenarios. mine has teh 3 prong plug only behind the safety latch on drivers side. build date 9/03
