One thing that I would like to add is to have some perspective on the car and its strengths and weaknesses. When I was thinking of buying my Mini I was also considering several other cars. I read the Mini forums and the forums of the other cars as well.
What I found was that there was remarkable consistency across the boards when it came to problems. ALL, and I mean all of the cars had production or running problems of some kind and they all ran from the minor to the severe. The voices of rage or resignation were there as well as the ranting against the non-responsivness of the manufacturer.
I read some absolute horror stories about cars that have been around far longer than the Mini and should have had the time to work things out. In my reading, at least, the Mini was no better or worse than the other cars I researched through the various forums. Do this yourself, read about the VW's or Subaru's or Neons. Their forums are just as informative and full of praise and complaint as we are.
As the present problems are fixed, new ones will arise. Automobiles are intensely complex machines and as such are subject to breakdown. Every interaction of every sytem cannot be foreseen, but it can be fixed. I believe that in time the number of problems with this fine car will become fewer and fewer.
