eBay Key Caveat

Well, I just had a very ungratifying trip to my nearest dealer (2+ hrs drive one way) to try to get my eBay key coded/programmed.

I didn't have (and don't recall receiving) a "code number" with my new key. Evidently without it my new key cannot be programmed. I even asked that they try to match the key to my ignition so that at least I would have a spare that I could use to open the door and start the car, sans remote function. They couldn't get the transponder matched up either.

So, wasted trip, wasted money on the eBay key. A classic lesson in false economy.

Will the key model used on post facelift cars work with pre-facelift cars?

This auction states that programming instructions is included, is it true that the key can be mathced to the car without special tools?

I'm not sure what you mean by facelift but I bought one like this off of ebay, had it perfectly cut and it doesn't work. It can be programmed to unlock the car, etc. but since the chip inside is not matched to the car, it won't start the engine even if it turns the ignition.
Waste of money for me ($45 for key and $30 for cutting).

Don't mean to bring an old topic back to the forefront... but I'm having a problem with MY ORIGINAL MINI KEY and some of the information described in this thread is applicable.

Anyhow, my original key (I have no aftermarket or ebay keys or anything) is now every now and then failing to turn over the ignition. I end up having to take the key out, open my door, close my door, and put the key back in to get the car to start. My car eventually starts, but sometimes it takes me a few minutes to get going thanks to this crazy routine I have to do. Does anyone know what could be causing this behavior? Could the battery in my key be dying and causing this to occur? Any ideas are appreciated! Thanks.

After reading Frenchie's post #25, I've come to the realization that MINI doesn't create 10 keys for each vehicle...They just allow the BCM to accept up to 10 "signatures"...as long as the key has the proper "chip" inside. Did I get that right?

Hi there, I got the chip part but o4amini said he got a extra key for $45. I can live without a remote but not without an ignition key. Thanks, jb
