R50/53 DSC-Do I need this?
Hi MINI motorin' mates!
I have a question about the DSC and if I really need it! I am not usually a speedracer driver (not a grandma either, though), so don't really know if I need this option. I want everything else in the Sport package - foglamps, spoiler, sport seats, and 5-spoke rims, but thought if I could save a couple of hundred dollars (don't even know if that's the right amount
), I could apply those to some driving lights instead! Is there a real reason I should keep the DSC? I am planning to take my MINI to the mountains to go snowboarding in the winter, but that's as sporty as the MINI gets!!
Would the DSC help in that situation?

the real question is do you need all those lights?
id say get the dsc and leave the lights... the standard lights should be enough unless your a rally driver.. in wich case you will need both the dsc and the lights.
and pleas if you keep the lights dont drive around in the city with them on. That is my largest pet peve.

They are $375+$25 shipping+installation ($? which cost I'm not sure about)...The dynamic stability control has been discussed ad infinitum on all of the MINI boards (Roadfly.org, MINI2, MCO)...many consider it a fab safety feature, others, the racier types, aren't sure they should have chosen it!
Much to mull over...
I now have 7500 miles on my MCS. I would definitely recommend DSC. It's there to help you save your hide in the event of the unexpect. When you do want to drive in such a way that would intentionally provoke the system to interfere, you could always just turn it off.
I don't have an S and I don't have DSC. I haven't missed it, and I push the car pretty hard. However, the decision should be made based on your own driving skills and how hard you push the car. I push my Cooper pretty hard (even take it to road course track days), and I have no problem without having DSC. But, I'll say that I'm used to running much more powerful cars that don't have ABS, DSC, Traction Control or any of those fancy computerized thingies
.
So, to make a long story short, I think you just need to assess how comfortable you are with the car and how hard you'll be driving it. One thing to keep in mind is that a couple hundred isn't that much on a car that costs around 20,000.

I opted for no Dsc... To tell you the truth, you probally won't use it... I have the ASC along with everyone else, and I keep it turned off most of the time, because there is no point... You'll soon realize that tires are REALLY REALLY expensive!

I would opt for the DSC. It is BMW 5 series technology, and does offer an additional measure of safety and performance, especially in rain, snow, and high speed accident avoidance situations; I figure when I reach 100% of the cars ability to remain in control, the DSC will be able to self correct faster than I can.
I have it on my mini (it wasn't on the one I test drove), and I noticed it the first time I took an S curve at 75. The car engine slowed slightly, and there was a braking from outside wheels. I didn't like the feeling of it, and I have shut it off when I want to go out for a quick spin. However I will leave it on otherwise, and think in an emergiency the car will steer better than I can.
