Carfax request - please

VIN: WDBKK65FX1F196304

2001 MB SLK 320

My girlfriend in interested in this car. I know that Carfax isn't always the most reliable tool, but it can be helpful. If anyone has a current account, I would appreciate if you could please PM or email me with the report.

Thanks!!

Seems to me $19.99 for a one time use or 24.95 unlimited would be money well spent. You are asking folks to steal from Carfax for you. Spend the money yourself.

EDIT >>> I was thinking that the seller may just spring for the report. I would if it meant selling the car. Just a thought.

I don't think it would be "stealing from Carfax". I'm in the middle of a one-month unlimited Carfax membership, and I'll be happy to run the report for you. The agreement with Carfax just says "personal use only", so as long as I'm not charging for the report or buying/selling cars professionally, I don't think I'm violating Carfax's rules.

Look for the report shortly.

Doesn't make it right to do so. I belong to another automotive forum & it's not done there. If it is, the thread gets locked. Every time it's done it steals from Carfax. But heck everybody does it why not? Do what you like.

Can you show me where in the Carfax Terms of Service "personal use" is defined? As far as I'm concerned, as long as I'm not selling the reports or running reports in conjunction with an automotive business I'm running, there's no rule that says that every single report I run has to be for a car that I'm actually buying or selling.

If I'm wrong, I'll withdraw my offer, of course.

I sure can't & why would I bother to? You feel that it's all right to give free reports to your buds. I don't, end of story.

Well, I *have* read through the Carfax user agreement, and unless I'm using it for *commercial* purposes (i.e. charging for reports), or I'm using it as a car dealer or a financial lender or insurance provider, then the Carfax 30-day "unlimited" subscription means just that - "unlimited".

The whole reason I got the subscription in the first place was to help out a friend in her search for a used car. Was I "stealing from Carfax" when I ran reports for her, since I paid for the subscription and not her?
I'm not stealing from Carfax any more than I'm stealing from my cable company when I invite a friend over to watch a movie or a football game.

Maybe offering to run a Carfax report for someone else would get a thread locked on another discussion board, but perhaps the difference is that the moderators here aren't a bunch of reactionary busybody pantywaists.

Until October 6th, I have an unlimited account with Carfax, and by the terms of their user agreement, I'm free to run as many reports as I wish, as long as I'm not getting any commercial gain from doing so.

It's a sign of my poor vocabulary that I can't do any better than that without resorting to profanity. Must be my low breeding, combined with too many years in the Navy!

Thanks for the offer to help

And my apologies to anyone who may have ever been offended by anything ever said, asked, posted, thought about, or whatever

Well Chuck, it appears you were right after all. Pulled this post from another thread on this forum......

Here is the quick note I wrote to Carfax:

"Carfax has been a hot topic on a auto enthusiast's bullentin board. At issue is whether it is an acceptable practice for a person who has purchased a Carfax account to run a VIN number for another person as a favor. They are not selling the information but are giving their friend the information they obtain through their paid account. The carfax agreement says you cannot use it for commercial use or for resale purchases. Does this mean that running a report for a friend is acceptable? Not giving out your login or selling it, but doing it for them. We would be very grateful if you would clear up this question for us."

Here is the reply I received:

"Thank you for contacting CARFAX.

When a customer purchases a 30 day unlimited account they agree to the following terms and conditions

I agree to pay a one-time charge of $24.99 (USD), plus applicable sales tax, according to my card issuer agreement. This 30 day Unlimited CARFAX Reports Plan is valid for 30 days from the date the first report is run, and is intended for my personal use only. Commercial use, resale and redistribution of CARFAX Reports is strictly prohibited and may lead to deactivation of my account and the imposition of additional charges for CARFAX Reports. I agree that my CARFAX Report purchase shall be governed by all the Terms and Conditions of use of the CARFAX Web Site.

Distributing, meaning providing CARFAX reports to others, especially through a forum is in violation of this agreement. If the CARFAX Fraud and Investigations department determines that an account is being used to provide CARFAX reports to others. We, reserve the right to charge 19.99 per report for these and/or additional violations - particularly if the postings/advertisements are not removed ASAP."

So I take that to mean they do not want you running the reports for a friend. Redistribution in their eyes is redistribution. They did take it to mean that the reports were posted on a forum, which they are not but I feel they are pretty clear about personal use meaning just that... personal use.

So now everyone knows Carfax's stance.

....Les
