That car could probably sell here (assuming reliability was good) if it met U.S. standards, especially for safety. Daihatsu has made some cool-looking cars but I'm doubtful that they've seriously courted US markets. Sadly, for now I don't see us being all that receptive...maybe in 15-20 years (or more). Part politics (private and other), part legitimate historical circumstances, part ill-guided mass-salesmanship...there remains a large gap between the U.S. auto market and the rest of the world, for better or worse.

Daihatsu Trevis

I think it's very cute on the outside, but the interior looks pretty sketchy to me. Like someone on the Autoblog posted, where's the fuel gauge?

I agree that it doesnt look comfortable to me either. Even for a commuter car you need some degree of comfort right? With the low horsepower I am sure that the hills and mountains around here it would be getting passed by the semi's going up hill. But I am a MINI driver and that kinda spoils you.

I'm thinking sort of a cross between a classic mini and a classic fiat 500 but with 4 doors.
Really smooth look

Agreed.

Very retro. I hope they pull it off.

bleh~ i posted this car on another thread last week~ anyway~
this trevis thingy has like 50-60 hp... with a 750cc engine I believe... so I think that's one reason it's not for sale in the states~ From a stereotyped approach, Americans seem to favor big, muscular, powerful, macho, etc cars. Like SUVs... duh...

50-60 hp is about on par with the horsepower in most classic minis so that makes perfect sense.

That's what I was thinking. Take two doors off, pop a turbo on it, and call it a day.

It's surprisingly decent looking, although Daihatsu's last foray into the U.S. market didn't go so well so I can't imagine them making a big comeback here anytime soon. It's better than those other cars from Japan(?) that they were just pasting the MINI and VW Beetle front ends on. Now those are horrendous!

Probably doesn't handle like a MINI, but it's sure got the looks!!!! Apparently this is the same as the latest "Mira Gino" in Japan.
