I'm not sure. Asian cars nowadays usually have great reliability. Combining British personality with Chinese reliability might work out. Still, I'm not sure I quite like the look of the new one's. They needed to bring a few more styling cues from the old one's in.

What Chinese reliability?

And as far as I'm concerned the car is about .05% British...that fact that is has "MG" on it. At least the MINI has more connections to it's British roots!

Unfortunately, I am also MORE stubborn than my grandfather. The day an Asian car parks in my driving is the day I walk to work. I have said it before and I'll stand by it, I would rather walk than drive asian junk.

Sorry, gotta keep this thread on topic, not my personal agenda. At least the new "MG's" look half decent!

There is jabell2r, it's called capitalism! If they are not bought they will not be made. Hate'um? Don't buy'um. End of problem.
What if the MINI as we know it today was in every way identical except that it was built by a Chinese company in Mexico - would it be any less popular? Probably somewhat so, but I still bet there would be at least 80 or 90% of today's total sales.

I personally would have ruled it out, but like I said before, I'm stubborn as hell and have a screwy agenda. I'm sure that it would not affect most people decisions to buy on of course. I'm a die hard American car fan and most now are made in Mexico or Canada. I always try to buy vehicles built here in the US and to this day have succeeded. The MINI will mark my first non-US built car.

Sad but true fact - there are no 100% US cars any longer. Oh sure you can slide your absolutisms as reality changes: 100% US becomes - mostly US which becomes - assembled in the US which becomes - owned by US companies which then must become - majority US shareholders which will eventually have to be degrade to - sounds US. Eventually you just gotta say screw it so you don't look like a total fool with quaint old-fashion (pre-global economy) standards.

I'm not knocking your wants or desires at all but it may be time to wake up and smell the Columbian coffee that was shipped to India for processing before being put into a bag made in China and flown to the US by a European company for a Japanese wholesaler who places it in markets owned by a Canadian company.

Oh believe me, you aren't the first person and there is not offense taken at all. My car I have now is the only one that I know was assembled in this country with mostly US parts but not completely. Other than that they have been enough American to call them all-american.

But you are completely right, in today's completely global economy, I do look like a fool parading my American car dominance around. I guess my dislike of imports stems mainly from the bad taste the import crowd has put in my mouth. Not just their stupid obnoxious rice buckets, but also the attitude that usually comes with it. I give respect to imports when earned, but there are just too man out there that make me hate them.

Plus, I hate people who put American Flags on the back of thier imported car, regardless of where the car was built. Just a pet peeve of mine.

The Mini is wildly successful in the US and it's marque has been gone longer than the MG. The Mini could not be imported into the US after 1968 - The MG was imported well after that.

BTW - I think the new MG will fail because it does not have a design that is modern, yet reflecting back to the classics.

I sure hope that these neo-MGs have some decent, modern safety features and have been crash test developed. If they are anything like China's Brilliance BS6 which is on sale in Europe, I'd stay the hell away.

This amounts to crash test dummy abuse. (mmm mmm mmm mmm)
