My take on this is that the Japanese made reliability their number one priority, whereas German auto makers put more emphasis on driving response. In my mind they both excel at what they do. Lee simply made a choice based on personal preference.

The best of both worlds...

I couldn't agree more. Our family has the best of both worlds. I obviously drive a MINI, but we also have two family oriented cars to cart around our son and our yellow Lab and they're both Toyotas. One 4Runner has 90K and the other one has 40K. Our last Toyota we sold with 175K on it and it was showing no signs of slowing down. Our current Toyotas are rock solid, absolutely trouble free , but a bit boring to drive. That's okay I know my family isn't going to be stranded somewhere.

The MINI on the other hand is pure fun. If it doesn't have Toyota reliability I'm okay with that. I didn't buy a MINI with that expectation. I wanted a performance oriented car that's fun to drive. <----Objective achieved.

+1, i would only buy japanese designed cars built in the US for my commute.

i don't have time to be fiddling around with little things here and there.
that's for the weekend.

"he recently switched from a Mercedes to a Toyota Lexus"

"The Lexus, Toyota's flagship luxury model, was launched in 1989 for the North American market and was later expanded to Europe and other parts of Asia. After confirming its popularity overseas, Toyota launched the sedan in Japan last year."

.....

Is the person that wrote this article completely stupid? CLEARLY they think "the Lexus," Toyota's flagship, is a popular luxury sedan.

I am at a loss for words.
