Do You Drive 55?

Warning some "foul" language

http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...speed+limit%22

Remember, anyone driving slower than you is an idiot ...
anyone driving faster than you is a maniac ...

I think the response from other drivers was absolutely predictable, and the entire stunt was extremely dangerous. Even though they may have been driving under the speed limit and therefore felt justified in saying they were not breaking the law, I think they have to expect some criticism for deliberately provoking other drivers like that. Not to justify road rage, but this is definitely a good way to provoke it.

Thats the point, obey the law and you cause problems! Break it and you'll be slapped with a fine! Its a form of modern passive aggressive resistance!

A logical extension of follow the law and you cause problems is don't follow the law and you won't cause problems. Anarchy doesn't work that way.

ahh Post Hoc- flawed from both sides I see. They did some thing with the confines of the law (mostly) and caused outrage and endagered lives. They did this in such a way that it pointed out a flaw within society: that even though speed limits work well on paper (get all cars traveling close to the same reasonable speed) the law functioned about as well as communizum functioned in Russia, people wanted more (in this case speed) and broke the law regualy to get it.

When you look at the details of the situation the students actually only provided the enviroment in which others seized the oppurtunity to break the law and endanger the lives of others. I did not mean to imply that obeying the law was in anyway wrong, but that in this case the act of obeying the law caused trouble.

Now I know this post is probably getting close to the limits of what becomes political so I'll back off, thank you for making me examine my arguement more closely, guess I did just post without as much logical and more emotion than I should have. Next time you are around a major metropolitan area drive the speed limit in the middle lane, you'll quickly realize why I agree with them, I have gotten pulled over for going 4MPH over the speed limit in a 55 (within many vehicle manufactures tolerances at highway speeds) and have nearly been killed by dozens of drivers for doing the speed limit in the right hand lane, cut-off, passed on the shoulder, tailgaited, had to move cause they were approaching 40mph faster than I was going and not changing lanes etc, etc.!

That was great.

Now the real sight was this morning when my dad was on the highway 5 miles from work and the MINI went into limp home mode (story in another thread). 25 mph on the side of the road...not fun

I love it!!! Prove your point through civil obedience...nice!!! These kids are smart...and many/most drivers out there (w/ lots more "experience") are complete morons.

FWIW, I've arranged my strange and bizarre life so that I do virtually no highway driving, so, yeah, I maybe drive 45mph occasionally. Lots of nice twisties though.

Another note...around here some semis did this about ten years ago on I-30 between Dallas and Fort Worth. The effect was the same.

My .02 here. Those folks were very stupid. Yes they were following the speed limit, but creating a very real hazard for the other users of that road. What they did was for their own enjoyment only. They can say they were making a statement, but I don't buy it. Just a bunch of stupid people endangering others. Pretty selfish if you'd ask me.

While I understand your point. I would like to point out if people obeyed the law they would not get any closer to this rolling roadblock. Which btw the Mass State Troopers did a few years back.

So who is really creating the hazard? Those following the law or those breaking the law? I would argue that those going over the limit are the culprits...no matter how much my heart doesn't want to beleieve and hates these self righteous 55mphers!!!

Can you imagine if other laws worked that way. You doing something legal causes a criminal in the commision of a crime to be danger is charged?

I probably buy it more easily only because I remember it being done before...and not by kids!! It doesn't sound like they'll be trying this again...probably not a very good idea for anybody really. I just think it's amusing when kids find ways to rebel while still following the rules (sorta).

Three of the kids WERE breaking the law because they failed to stay to the right except for when passing. The left lane bandits of this country cause more problems than folks speeding on the interstates. IMHO.

Not every state has "left lane" passing laws. I don't know the law in Georgia but I do know here in Alabama there has been much debate over slower traffic keep right & left lane passing laws & from reading the responses of our state troopers it appears that they are unsure exactly what the state code means.

If I may ask a favor. Please don't anyone go the speed limit and refuse to let others pass this year on the Dragon. Be respectful and pull over for those of us that are law breakers.

Now if I were to drive the dragon while talking on the cell phone, eating a Big Mac, yelling at the kids in the back seat or downing a big Slurpee. 35 mph would be safe for that road. Yet, I get in a car to drive so I do believe I am capable of safely exceeding that limit, though illegal, because I pay attention while driving instead of using the vehicle as an extension of my home.

Anyone ever watch the show about the Autobahn on History Channel? It's interesting how they are capable of driving at those speeds yet have less fatalities as we do on our highways. It has to do with the responsibility of the driver. Germans treat their cars as a means to get from point A to point B safely. We treat it as a means to sit back and relax from point A to point B. Thus the reason for so many complaints about the small cup holders in the MINI which eventually was the cause of the new 1/2 gallon jug holder attatched to the dash. We don't drive over here. We sit back, relax and eat breakfast until we get to work. Until that stops. Who in there right mind would allow us to travel at higher speeds?

I thought they were just going to drive the speed limit and demonstrate how dangerous that was. That would have a proved a point. To do what they did, though, and deliberately plug all four lanes of traffic is just asinine, and it's a surefire recipe for disaster. I guarantee if they did this for a few hours every weekend, there'd be a casualty within a couple of months. Using the left lane for passing only may not be the law in all states, but it sure should be!

In L.A., if the freeways are moving at 55 mph or faster, it's a miracle! If those kids tried to pull that stunt in moving traffic here, they'd probably get shot....no kidding.

I say kudos to these students though, they found a way to get us talking about the absurdity of stupid laws. They found a way to prove a point and create disscusion. Imagine if this was played for yor state congress and national news programs and it was accompanied by the stats from post #7 and the information about how much safer the autobahn is (although they spend way more $$$ per mile). Even if they had just done a train of four cars at the limit on the right the still would have annoyed other motorists. I don't think the limits would remian at the 55 mark.

How does the driving behavior shown on this video relate to speed laws? IMHO the only concept this video demonstrates is that when people ignore the general rule, "keep right when not passing", traffic flow is impeeded.

I applaud these guys for doing something so creative. I wish they had shown if the local radio stations picked up the story. It would've been pretty funny.

Seriously though, people that park in the left lane and go the speed limit put more people in danger than the worst speed offenders. Since this one car is blocking up the left lane, all the typical "left laners" (read: speed offenders) will continue to drive aggressively, but will have to drive aggressively across all the lanes just trying to get around the one car that is parked in the left lane. This is the main thing that contributes to my roadrage during my drive to work last summer.

I've noticed lately that on my trips to and from Austin, people have actually learned to move out of the left lane when I'm coming and they do it pretty fast too. I wonder why... And if they don't, I flash them.

[EDIT] In addition, I've seen at least a couple posts talk about keeping right while passing. However, as I have learned so many times in my defensive driving classes, when you pass, you are not allowed to exceed the speed limit. Since these kids were going the speed limit, passing is a non-issue.
