yep,

they have all those cool tdis, and we get the 100hp old generation tdi? and then, they expect us to buy VWs instead of Hondas. They still market old bodystyle Golf here in US, while the MK5 had been in the market for almost a year. Stupid marketing, can not understand VW sometimes....

If you'll notice, we have the Mk.V Jetta while they still have the IV Bora, and they get the Mk.V Golf while we get the IV... you wanna suggest how they could debut two best-selling models simultaneously to two continents, all in one year? That's quite a lot of cars to crank out

The Jetta is VWoA's largest seller and therefore VW's cash cow in the U.S. It has been reported that it was built mainly with the U.S. in mind.

The Golf has always been a sales leader for VW in Europe, so it makes sense that they would get it first.

A global launch would be massively expensive and in terms of quality (which VW needs to bring up drastically), it allows them to focus on each individual market where the cars are so important, rather than spreading themselves too thin.

I think it's been the U.S. dealers that have asked for the GTi to come before the Golf, because they need the performance/image leader to bring folks and gain interest in the Golf on these shores.
