The Federal gas tax is 18.4 cents per gallon, then this link has the state by state breakdowns of gas taxes, which appears to be an average of about another 20 cents per gallon, plus another roughly 6% for sales tax. So there is a roughly $0.40 fixed tax per gallon, with another 6% (or 18 cents at current prices) of sales tax, for a total of roughly 50 cents per gallon.

Taxes comprised nearly %50 of the cost of fuel in some cases!!!

Most states is not a fixed amount taxed. the tax goes up as the prices does.

here is a fine example, Kentucky
Variable based on 9% of the average wholesale price of gasoline with minimum price of $1.11 or 10 cpg. In addition, there is a supplemental highway user tax of 5 cpg for gasoline and 2 cpg for special fuels plus a 1.4-cpg underground storage tank fee. Commercial carriers pay surtax via a quarterly report of 2.2 cpg on gasoline and 5.2 cpg on special fuels.
Or how about this one from Maine
Plus for gasoline: .07 cpg for Coastal and Inland Water fund, 1.38 cpg for Groundwater Fund and 40 cpg/10,000 gallons for Petroleum Market Share Act Plus for diesel: .07 cpg for Coastal and Inland Water Fund and .6 cpg for Groundwater Fund. Governor signed legislation in 2002 to index gasoline tax beginning 7/03. Tax increased .6 cpg 7/1/04.

it is nice to see that there are others out there wasting company time to respond to threads in the middle of the day...
i heard gas hit $6 in some places in georgia due to the main pipeline into Atlanta being shutdown. anyone heard about this?
As far as taxes go and the buildup of total cost, my point was that the cost of crude oil per gallon of gas pails in comparison to conversion, distribution and tax considerations per gallon of petrol. We must consider all the components that go into making a gallon of gas, not just crude, when we discuss the sudden spike in prices.

I saw that Colonial Pipeline Company and Plantation Pipeline are back up and running at roughly 33% output. Estimated to be at 66% by the weekend and 100% by Tues. It is true that all pipeline activity shutdown for about a 36 hour period due to no electricity. It takes a huge amount of power to get those pumps to move gasoline, heating fuel, jet fuel, diesel, etc.

Ignore the Alarmists, they feel good by making everyone else alarmed.
Per the news this AM, GAS will be $5 by the spring. Cheap compared to the rest of the world ... and you will get used to it, just like your used to $2.69 gas

hey chows...i am the last person complaining as I am one of those big oil and natural gas shareholders whose going to retire early as a result of high crude prices. and you are right...i gladly pay $3.25/gallon.
All I was saying is that there is a much bigger picture than simply a barrel of crude.

Dang, who says it don't??? Heck, Billi-bob - we's sho' happy we's amuricahns, we's just about slap-happy 'bout payin' any 'ol amount of money we's need to juss ta git soma that dang gaz-o-leen to put in them dern MINIs.
Dude, we are all proud to be americans, so lay off the flag wavin' stuff.
Europeans do pay more for gas, but they also don't have to drive the distances we do, they have mass transit systems that are usable (meaning you don't have to drive to them!) and they see benefits for the tax dollars they spend - higher education, childcare and medical treatment to name a few. They also don't move all their goods around by truck like we do. They use rail for that to a large degree.
