>>I know of someone who died in a car crash. He survived the impact of a head-on crash only to die horribly from burns because he could not get the seat belt unlatched and was trapped in the burning car. He could have been saved but notbody around had anything available to cut the seatbelt. All said, I think a tool that could help you escape and increase your chance of survival is worth considering.

OK, no disrespect to the chap you know who died in an accident, but he most likely could not get the seatbelt free because he was unconscious and/or severely injured from the head-on impact, so if he had a life hammer, it was useless. If he was conscious, why didn't he undo the seatbelt like we all do every day, and get out of the car? Most of the accidents that I have seen involving a vehicle on fire are do to high speed and total distruction of the vehicle, and the fire was the least of the problem.

He was conscious and the seatbelt latch would not come undone. Other people that were at the scene tried and couldn't get it open either. I was told that there were some parts in the car (BMW) made from magnesium that burned very hot and quickly. I'm not sure that he could have done anything with a seatbelt cutter, but someone else at the scene could have saved him if THEY had something to cut him free. They had the driver's door open but could not get him out of the seat belt. He would have walked away from the accident.
I carry a pocketknife on my key chain mostly for everyday utility but it will be there if a seatbelt emergency arises.

I agree, the hammer will probably save someone elses life not your own. So for that it is a good thing.
