Old Tire Disposal
Old Tire Disposal
I got a new set of tires/wheels for my wife's car from Tire Rack. Had them shipped to the closest installer. No big deal, the whole process went without a hitch, that is, until disposal of my wife's old tires/rims came up. They sent them home with her!
Anyone else had this happen to them? Just curious.

There is a mandatory $1 - $2 per tire disposal fee in most states (except WV = $5)
and I've heard of some shops charging nominally more.
Sometimes they'll say, "well, if you don't take the old tires with you it'll cost ya" without
disclosing the amount, which intimidates people into just taking them.

You don't want them laying around outside your residence, when they collect water they make mosquito breeding havens in the extreme. A little known fact (no thanks to Cliff), the Southeast Asian tiger mosquito has taken a foothold in the US as a result of hitching rides in tires trasported by sea. Take them to a recycle depot that accepts tires.
I actually gave them to a used tire dealer. He was happy to take them. They still had decent tread on them, but the rims were shot. As they were 9 year old factory rims that weren't well cared for, that didn't surprise me.
Hopefully you have already taken care of them but, if not do what I did when I got my engine in on the crate that had an old tire under it. Just drive down to a local tire shop after they have closed and drop it off by the door. Do it to a name brand store because they have the funds to take care of it where a mom and pop shop might not.
