Check out the 205HP Supercharged Cobalt SS coupe...what do u think?

http://www.chevrolet.com/cobalt/

it is built on GM's new Delta platform and shares components with the German made Opel Astra.

Not bad, although the phrase "Nissan Sentra" springs to mind.

And the wing on the Supercharged SS is dumb.

Well...better than the Cavalier....but still wouldn't be taking up any space next to my MCS in the driveway.

Can you say "rental car"?

Coming soon to an on-terminal location near you.

I think pictures don't do it enough justice...it is a really nice looking and well built car, far more appealing than any Ford Focus. I saw both , the Cobalt SS coupe and the Cobal sedan at the Ft Lauderdale Autoshow last weekend.

No matter how you look at it, GM seems to finally be waking up and realizing it that a 23 yeard old J-body subcompact wasn't cutting it at all.

Unfortunately given GM's track record of fleet sales, it is likely the Cobalt will end up replacement lost of rental Cavaliers (Eroding its resale value). Still a very nice car with a very unlike GM interior...pretty solid looking product.

The Cobalt is really hard to ignore.

The link didn't work for me for some reason.

I found these over on Edmunds.

Certainly is a significant improvement over the crapalier...i've had the unfortunate experience of driving these on few occasions and it's truly sickening to think they sell so many.

I still can't believe that it took GM this long to respond to the Focus! As far as being more appealing than the Focus visually, Cooper4us, I don't know. If that's the case, then these are some terrible pictures!

What are the TWO bumps on the roof, front and rear, in the 4th pic that DiD posted?

And if ever there was a car in sore need of a body kit, it's that SS!

chrisnl,

I noticed that too.

Edmunds said Onstar and XM were both going to be options, maybe one antenna for each of those functions?

My dad brought one home (pre-prod) last weekend for a drive. Here was my
take on it... No prizes for figuring out what company he works for

It was an LS (fairly base). The interior was nice, but nothing special.
Ergonomics reminded me of the Opel Astra, a cousin of it...
Engine is better isolated than the current crapiler, brakes - typical
econobox mushy (disc/drum on the LS), handling- well tighter than
the outgoing car on par with a Focus. Overall was tight, no rattles
(w/6,000mi) fits seemed good overall. Major improvement over the
J-car, bringing it up to the level of the Focus and current econoboxes.
Getting an opporunity to try out an SS in a few weeks, will post how
that one is... It's funny, he keep saying, "so how do you like it". Usual
response is "nice, improvement, but still keepin the Mini" I may, tho, get a Chevy Aveo BASE (not even A/C)
as a winter car/around town machine. Maybe...

The ugly roof bumps are for the OnStar and XM radio options. I was never a fan of the Focus...to me one of the ugliest cars in Ford's stable...I don't see what people likes so much about them...

The Cobalt is a huge quantum leap for GM. The Cavalier, Sunfire, et al were made on a 23 year old platform...and to think this was the best "Made in the USA" small car GM had to offer (The Prizm, Vibe, etc don't really count as those are rebadge Toyotas).

The 4 door I saw at the auto show (Cobalt LS) was a very nice looking car. Pictures son't do the thing justice. It has some design lines found in VW's specially in the back.

The 2 door model looks very nice too. Anything that is not a Crapalier is definetely better

I have an unused GM credit car with about $1,700 worth of points in it. I am not going back to GM anytime soon (My issues with domestic labeled cars are the stinky resale values and servicing of some dealers), but I am glad to see that GM is finally catching on with decent products to go head to head with the Asians and that those products have Euro genes in them (Malibu and Cobalt).

The interiors are more of what you would expect to see in a VW than a typical American car.

Thanks for the pics, Dave. The Cobalt coupe you see there is the standard LS model, not the SS. The SS has a body kit (With a very Ricey rear spoiler) and the dash has metal accents instead of fake wood ones:

The Cobalt rides in the same Delta FWD platform as the fugly Saturn ION. But the Chevy looks so much better in and out and better executed is almost like the difference between heaven and earth.

This car is on the cover of the current Autoweek and looks pretty good. The performance numbers (200+hp/torque) weren't bad either for their SS.

Ever since the MK4 Jetta/Bora came out, a lot of other four door sedans seem to be taking styling cues from it: the Corolla, the IS 300, and now the Cobalt. The Cobalt's interior is like a not quite finished Jetta interior. Look at the shape and the layout of the dash, the vents, the center console, the gauge cluster, the sterring wheel spokes. Now look at the exterior A,B, especially C pillars, and the door handles.

I still think VW has superior interiors to all others, in their price category... Well finished, good materials, good feel...
