Just scanned an article in Sports Compact Car on the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo. The features list is pretty amazing for the 28+K cost: turbo and water cooled intercooler engine producing 280 BHP and 282 ft/lbs of torque, all wheel drive, LSD's for front and back, Rocaro seats, Momo steering wheel, big Brembos on all four corners, plus amenities like AC, power windows, etc. 0-60 in 5.3, 157 limited mph, more nimble than a Subaru STi. Started to wonder about my order for a JCW MCS coming next year until I looked at the pictures to go with the article. My doubts vanished instantly. While I'd never callenge one of these (except maybe on seriously twisted roads), at the end of the day, the person most likely to keep looking back at their car as they walk away from it will NOT be the Evo driver.

You are so right. With the aero kit and options I added to my MCS I paid the dealer 28K and change. I had looked at faster cars in the same price range but at the end of the day what mattered was looking at the MINI and having that stupid eternal grin on my face. 33,000 miles later I still look at it and think how cool the little beast looks. Not only that, the comraderie, rallys, group meets, etc. are phenomenal. Don't think I'd ever get that great feeling from a Scooby or Evo.

Now an Elise on the other hand............

Of the EVO and the STi, I think the STi is easier (not easy, easier) on the eyes, but the brashness of these two cars is part of the appeal.

Mitsu styling: yawn. I rented a Lancer recently while traveling - OK it wasn't an EVO, but I was not impressed one bit. The interior reminded me of my 92 Saturn - very dated and cheesy. Saturn has since improved quite a bit, but this was a 2003 Lancer! The suspension was noisy, something must have been loose in the rear. Handling was econo-car typical. I can't see ever buying anything from these guys...

 No comparison between the Evo and the MINI - the MINI is fun and fun to look at. The Evo is simply.......FUGLY....

Whoa, that's a bit harsh.
The EVO is not that ugly. It is not Styled for the market MINI's are styled for.
It's a MACHINE with the essential wrappings. It's awe inspiring goodness under the sheet metal.
Much Like the STI (which has become and inspriation for MINI Styling - See OCARI KITS)
The STI is perfect for what it is built for, Looks great and will scare the pants of ANY of us.
I would say that either of these cars, EVO or STI would dust our MINI's on a curvy road if WE drove them.
The STI is Built for tough terrain and curves. If it's all paved curves, lower and tighten the suspension and he'd say bye bye to us watching us dissapear in his rear views, as we shifted into 2nd gear.

I've rolled with the Scoobies of SoCal and they perform.
I'm kinda ashamed that MINI owners keep saying things like, The MINI would rule them in the curves. It'd take one hell of an upgraded mini suspension!

Sorry I ranted on, but I don't think they are "Fugly"

I love the EVO. I've driven it and I can say I loved every second of it and yes I looked back. Everything about the car is insane, including the styling. Love it or hate it, it is what it is. I also think the M Coupe is so ugly its beautiful so maybe that invalidates my opinion.

Hmmm, I can actually tell you from attending a WRX dyno day, that these guys also go on group drives, picnics and such. They do the same things as the MINI owners do - talk shop, look at their cars and gush over mods and differences.

And I am staying away from car dealerships - if I test drive an STI or EVO, I could be in trouble. The styling is just as outrageous (and to some ugly) as some find the MINI. You can like the MINI and the EVO - why not? They are both cars capable of getting one into heap big trouble....
