So many of the mk2's have been modified. It is very rare to see a mint original spec example. I find those more appealing to look at. Kind of like an original '32 Ford vs. those hot rod roadster abominations.
I Understand and can appreciate the work and dedication it would take to modify a car, and I understand the owner's love for it and the process. Just not all of it directly appeals to me.

I am 24 and thought it just want's my thing. Just not a great looking car to begin with, then to slam it and have tiny wheels...ehh not me. #1 and #4 are ok, #2 and #3 not so much for me.
I'm not the biggest fan of Volkswagen, so I don't have strong feelings either way, but I do think that the VW in the first picture looks very "clean". I especially like the shaved door handles.
The one in the last picture really bothers me though, only because I dislike "stretching" narrow tires onto rims that are much wider than the tire width calls for.
I understand the reason for it (being able to use wide rims without the tire sidewall hitting the inside of the fender arch), but I think it looks god-awful. Either use narrower rims, or use the correct-width tire and just clearance the inner fenderwell so the tire doesn't rub.

And ScottRiqui. That would COMPLETELY defeat the purpose of stretching tire. You say you understand why they do it, but then say "run narrower rims". The point is of stretching is so that you CAN run wide rims while still clearing everything. You would never be able to get that low without stretching, even on low profiles, without constantly destroying your tires.

Just use a narrower rim (appropriate to the section width of the tire you're using), with the proper offset, and you can fit the same tire at the same ride height without rubbing. Sure, you won't get your precious "poke", but so what?
My last car was an '06 mkv GTI. I loved that car (not as much as I love my MCS). Every single mk2 Golf that I see where I live is either riced out or slammed so far that it bottoms out when going over a pebble. #'s 1 and 4 are not bad but #'s 2 and 3 are horrible IMO.
On another note, the mkvi GTI looks intriguing (I have not test driven one yet). When the time arrives where I need to look at a 4 door vehicle, a 4 door GTI will be high on my list.

Me too, this is like the one I had. It was in Montanna Green. 16V - BBS rims/Pirelli P6's and Recaros.....I painted the grill and mirrors body color but kept the red outline. Replaced the fogs with a set of PIAA 900's Projectors which were blue when off and yellow when on....had to do some trimming but they looked factory when done.

If you don't like the Mk2 then by all means go ahead and click on the next thread, it's not your cup of tea and that's ok. If it's what sparks your interest or you've got some constructive input then feel free to post it. I've cleaned this thread up once so you've all had your warning as far as I'm concerned, now keep it on topic.
You don't have to like it, that doesn't mean you can't articulate your opinion constructively. Also, trolling for negative remarks to stir up trouble is also not welcome.

Anywayyyy, I have to agree with Scott. And even if there are no accounts or data saying stretching a tire is dangerous, I'd much rather run the correct tire on the rim.
Nevermind. You just don't get it. The precious poke is part of stancing it out dude. It is PART of the look. Wide wheels, staggered offsets, stetched tire, and slammed on the ground. Most of these cars are so low that rubber contact doesn't matter, they aren't planning on taking any g-force turns at the track.
Oh. So it's awesome?

And it's not just an age thing, either - I saw stretched tires on slammed mini-trucks when I was in high school and college in the 80s, and thought it looked stupid then, too.
Well, I understand the mechanics of it, but I guess I just don't appreciate the aesthetics of it. To me, it looks precisely as stupid as buying a king-size bed frame and box spring because you like the way they look in your bedroom, and then putting a twin-size mattress on top of it because you only have twin-sized sheets.

Here is the last Mk2 that I've seen "slammed".

He drove 8 miles without that wheel to finish this stage! Now that's marvelous!

I still have my dead Jetta GLi in the backyard. I do miss the growl of the exhaust.
