What will be a classic
You're right. Back then those cars were a dime a dozen. Most of the ones being mentioned are the easy one to pick out. Back then, people knew the Z28s and Shelby GTs and SSs were special. They're still special today. But, you're right about the common ones. Things is, these "common" classics kind of stopped in the 60s. The last classic sedan that I can think of was the Impala from the 60s. I cant think of any "Classics" like that from the 70s, or 80s.
I think the biggest thing preventing that kind of thing with modern cars, is that they're disposable. They aren't made of lead and cast iron that are smelted in the dungeon of some castle and lasts for all eternity. They're made of alloys and plastics that wear out, fatigue and eventually fail.

I think I would also say that the higher end Mustangs, Camaros and Firebirds from the 2000s would fall into that category. Shoot, those cars with the SS/Z28/WS6/Cobra packages were easily over $30k, some over $35k. Not many people are going to buy one of those cars for that much, new, when they're going to depreciate so sharply in a year or two. Plus they're cars that just seem special, even if they're special in some circles.
Cars that I think could be:
98+ Camaro Z28/SS, Firebird WS6
