22cooperS asking what his 16 year old brother should buy got me curious.
What was your first car?
Mine was: (in 1999)
1984 Audi 4000s, $250 two tone interior and exterior. A severe transmission fluid leak and it blew relays frequently. I replaced the transmission with one I pulled at a junkyard and had a glove compartment full of relays. It built character...
Kids shouldn't have New cars something cheap and safe is ideal.
Technically the Free 1985 Audi 4000s I totaled my first time driving was my first car. I was more concerned with not stalling then the pickup coming way to fast as I made a left at an intersection.
It was by far the better car even though the former owner offered to pay to have it taken off her hands.

My first car was a 1968 Triumph TR250. The one below isn't it, but it is one I saw a few years back at a classic car rally. I was straight out of West Point and I just had to have a classic looking British car. I once had it up to about 120 mph on a German autobahn.
I drove a land yacht. My father and I referred to the color as baby ---- green. I both hated and loved the car. In fact, to this day, the first keychain that I purchased (a little stone with an x carved into the center of it that was exactly the same color as the car) rides around in Viola and has ridden in every vehicle that I have driven since I sold it...
It was a 1979 Mercury Grand Marquis. It had power windows, power steering and power everything and by God when that power steering went out on me one day, I had ten times more respect for what a Godsend power steering really was!
I don't have a picture of the actual car, but it is still running to this day. A gentleman that lived down the street from me purchased it and still drives it.

When I was 16 my first car was a 1965 Mustang Fastback with the K-code motor... A small block 289 with 271 HP and little to nothing in terms of weight..Trouble was just a little push of the right foot away... I had it until my Senior year in H.S. when my father restored me a 1961 MGA...
1974 Plymouth Duster, dark green with body damage, ripped seats and a cracked dash. It had a slant six in it from a 72 Dodge Dart. My brother pieced it together for me. It was slower than molasses, but it kept me out of trouble.
And I loved it because it was mine.

My first car was a 62 corvair 3 speed that I got for 150.00 in 1977 it leaked more oil than I burned gas those were the days.

Nothing cool. Took $1200 dollars that I saved up from my part time job when I was 16 (1977) and bought a 73 Mercury Capri. It had a transmission problem five months later and I replaced it with a slightly cooler 74 Mustang II.
1978 Caprice Classic Land Barge. It may have been old, but it sure was ugly! Truth is, it was big. But I was 17, had a smokin' hottie of a girlfriend, and it had front bench seats. That's all a lad needed at that age.
My first car was and is a 1971 SAAB Sonnett III, someday I'll fix it back to running condition. I ported the heads, put in stiffer valve springs, competition cam, a two barrel carb and a lightened flywheel. I don't know exactly what is horsepower rating was after I finished, but with a 1.7l and 1700lbs weight with front wheel drive it was fun. It was definitely bare bones.
schr-didn't you ever hear all the old rap songs about being 'audi4000'- meaning you're out? haha.
I definitely can't say I wouldn't rather have the Audi.
My first car was a 1980 Chevette. Ouch. My dad bought it 6 months after I was born (1979) and managed to keep it running until I turned 16. No power steering, no power brakes, 4 speed stick, 4 door, with rear wheel drive and a whopping 60 hp. I was lucky to keep it going in a straight line when it rained! It was finally retired when the drivers seat started rusting through the floor!
Thank god times have changed!

1988 Jeep Comanche Laredo. 4.0 I6, automatic, power windows, power lock (drives side didnt work), long bed, sliding rear window, bucket seats, A/C, tilt wheel...2WD. i loved that truck. i beat the holy hell out of it and it never died. to this day it is still the most optioned, most powerful vehicle i have ever owned.
funny thing is, i got rid of it because gas was too expensive. it was around $1.60/gallon

1965 VW Bug...$600. It had mushrooms growing in the back due to a leak in the rear window. It had so much rust in the footwells that when I drove through water I'd get spayed on the legs...nothing a little fiberglass couldn't fix! LOL
Mine was a 1981 midnight blue Toyota Sunchaser. It was essentially a Celica that had the top cut off in Miami & a roll bar & targa top were added. It came out right after the US legalized convertibles in the states again. I was the envy of everyone at my high school as it was considered a really cool car for the time
