i still dont like hybrids or the mareketing of hybrids. how exactly did they achieve 94 MPG? around town, under 30 MPH where the gas motor might kick on? people buy these fuel sippers and think "look at me, im so great. i bought a hybrid to make my 125 mile all hiway commute to work. im going to get 100 MPG like the commercial." people dont realize that these things get the same mileage on the hiway as a civic and the civic will cost around $10,000 less. i guess it just shows that society will believe everything they are told.
not to mention, people forget that batteries have a shelf life. when they die you are left with an ugly, underpowered sedan with 500 lbs of dead weight that costs more to replace than the car is worth. if you cant tell, i dont like the hybrid idea so much. we need off fossil and on something else. right now we are just putting band-aids on bullet wounds

I saw a show on Discovery a few years ago when they first came out. An Austrailan company was modifying them and getting about 110 mpg. Part of the mod was a battery charger at night so the guy commuting could run on the batteries longer and not need to run the gas engine much. Since the car runs the engine whenever the batteries get too low (like on a long highway drive), keeping the batteries fully charged when the car is not in use makes a lot of sense.

The 2009 is supposed to be a "plug-in" and that is indeed the secret weapon for mileage. We own a 2008 Prius and the MINI. Traffic congestion is such that the Prius is a very comfortable ride in traffic. The JBL 6 CD stereo system is awesum to say the least. The Prius uses 87 octane fuel. I like the MINI when spirited driving is available .... and the Prius when traffic sucks! The Prius has a very roomy back seat with plenty of leg room for my 6' 2" frame even when the front seats are all the way back. I can not even attempt to do that in the MINI. I'd have a diesel MINI in a heart beat if we could get them here in the States!!!

Couple of 20 year olds from Wheaton, IL were on the local news this morning here in Chicago. They added an extra battery pack which they charge off their home's power grid. The battery pack lasts 15-20 miles, and they figure that most people only drive about 30 miles a day. With that mod, they were getting about 100 mpg (according to their claim). Thought it was cool that a couple of guys read up about it, did it, and it works...
Not really any news (just more rumors and a brief "history"):
