IP in a MINI?

I realize this ventures on the borders of "dorkdom", but I got pretty excited after reading this article:

http://www.automotivedesignline.com/news/204300334

IP as the data transfer protocol in a MINI would leave excellent opportunity for some nice electrical customizations. (and some awesome opportunities to completely hose your car too)

Just think of the possibilities!

a packet sniffer and you would know how and what the computer was talking about all the time.

And converting to IP allows for easy conversion to wifi (as the protocols are there) I wouldnt use it for component to component communication but rather to off board sensors to detect and pull information in flight.

Although, going WiFi in your car could lead to potential drive-by hackings!

I could see using IPv6, not IPv4. If they used fiber optics for the physical medium, they could get better real-time use by putting different subsystems on thier own channel, thus allowing 100% overlap of packets without collisions.

For external connections, use PPPoE with a connverter and theoritically all cars could exchange data.

Put a small antenna on the car and a transmitter and suddenly a roaming Internet relay system would be available. Hmmm. The possibilities are mind boggling.

One step closer to total machine dominance over mankind! MUWHAHAHAHA!

I read this article and think it's an amazing idea. Although, after watching BWM release iDrive, I will certainly be staying away from the first generation of this technology.

BTW PPPoE is an incredibly ugly hack and should have been buried before it was born. It shouldn't be used for anything.

I think car to car communications should happen over the new spectrum that the FCC is auctioning here shortly. The "openness" of that spectrum will allow for the car manufacturers to access cellular spectrum directly with their own applications. Trying to negotiate a car to car "relay" network seems tricky and honestly I don't know if I want your car talking to my car

I never thought in a million years that I would see the IPv4 vs. IPv6 discussion on a Mini forum...

It still does not mean we are any closer in this country to seeing it. Although my government contractor friends tell me different.

PPP is not a hack. It was a good way for desparate systems to communicate using the same transport mechanism.

It would allow a non IP based comm system to easily communicate with any other system. Name another protocol that allows that?

I think the test was originally executed and successful with IPv4, although if implemented they would use IPv6.

I never said PPP was a hack. PPP is excellent/elegant. I said PPPoE was a hack.
