Every time since I just show the cop the plate and they let me off. Happened about 3 times total.
That's genius!

This is purely hypothetical, but if the nut holding my license plate to the tow-hook bolt were to become loose and I had to remove the whole unit until I can find a wrench, do you think the peace officers would let me go? I hope so because you never know when that might happen.

Well, I'll say again from my first hand experiences that the parking peeps look out for missing front plates and it is *not* a fix-it ticket, it is black and white - either you have a front plate or you are in violation of code and nothing will make that go away beyond payment (the last one we got in SF was $100).

So you can gamble on getting away with no front plate by using an excuse if pulled over by a PO who can hand out a fix-it, but be aware that the situation with the DPT is a whole other thing.

For as long as I've lived in SF, missing front plates ARE *fix-it* tickets. I've paid for 3 individual times at the DPT in the general past, you just need to have SFPD sign off on your ticket(s) before the due date listed on the ticket.

Welp, not the last one we got (which actually was quite a while ago at this point, not very recent). When contacted they said nope. Perhaps it varies depending on how much revenue they need or something...

Unfortunantly thats harder to get creative on "fixing"

I went to 3 different PD stations without fixing it and dont tell my wife but found a young rookie (GIRL) at the desk to take a look at the car.
A bit of flirting and an open sunroof got the job done.

I am wondering if you bent a front plate to "wrap around" the bumper would they still be pissed
Yes we, I mean they would. You can not alter your Cal. plate from it's original form, it must be flat & in clear view, & no I don't run one, but if I must I'll get a tow hook mount just long enough to get it signed off.

Well, like several folks here, I've been ticketed by Palo Alto parking police in my daughters Mazda for having no front plate (that was last year). The ticket was a "fix-it" with a charge of $10 to fix and $85 to just pay. She choose to pay because she liked the plate (with the numbers and letters it looked like it spelled A**HOLE and it wasn't a vanity plate). We had bought it used for her and it only had the back plate.
I learned to always park head in to a wall in public parking off the street.

Yeah, each city is different. In Los Angeles it was only a $25 tkt and it wasn't even worth bothering with the fix it. It is really hard to try to hide the missing front plate parking on the street in SF, one of the tix was even on a residential street - they really seem to be looking out for it. It has been nice not havig to worry about it since having the tow hook mount and I much prefer the way it looks vs the stock middle little mustache or buck tooth look

you know i have gone to sf a couple times (downtown and noe valley area) and i haven't got a ticket yet. i even parked in a parking lot facing the ferry building so my car was in plain site. but i don't want to push my luck though, interesting though the dealer did give me an option when i got the car in 2004 if i want the front plate on or not...

I don't know about the ferry bldg area, but for around Noe you are very lucky - the SO and I have encountered the more aggressive ticketers around town.

We very clear about not wanting the bumper drilled and when we picked up the car we had to sign a waiver about it, guess the dealers can get some heat for selling cars sans a pre-set up location for a front plate.
